How harmful is a small amount of coolant in the oil
Hello all,
I have been to busy latelty to brake anything so it has been a bit quite lately. Although something is on my mind. I recently replaced my vacuum pump and when I did a small amount of coolant seeped into the engine from the void left from the removed vacuum pump. Is several ounces of coolant going to screw up my oil. I run delvac one and at forty bucks an oil change I am a little hesitant to dump it out. I am about ready to change it anyway and would anyone suggest running a cleansing change of regular dino and then more delvac. Thanks for all your help. bob |

No, it will just boil away the first time the engine reaches operating temperature.

Thanks
That is what I thought it would do. I would let it idle with the oil fill cover loose so that it could escape. Thanks bob |

I'm a little nervous about Ken's advice:
Ethylene Glycol raises the boiling point of coolant considerably above that of plain water, even when not under pressure, and I would be afraid of the possibility that more than a fraction of an ounce could cause a lot of sludge formation in important places in the engine, such as the oil pump pickup, unless you're in a really hot climate right now.

You don't have to leave the oil cap off, the coolant vapors will escape through the CCV.

Yeah..I am also a bit nervous with that advice.
I don't think it will boil off. Small amounts of condesation WILL boil off but I think it is imprudent to leave "several ounces" of coolant in the oil. It will emulsify with the oil and circulate with it. This may cause the oil to not do its job of lubricating as well as it should..and permenent damage may result. If it were my engine I would consider it cheap insurance to change the oil and filter asap. If you have driven it with the coolant in the oil you may want to pull the valve cover to see if there is a mayonaise like accumulation under it. If so you may want to have the engine flushed and the oil pan removed and the oil pickup cleaned off. If there is the "mayo" under the valve cover it will probably also be partialyy clogging the oil pickup...and may starve the bearings for oil at a critical time. But if no "mayo"..no problem.

I vote for changing the oil. Coolant will emulsify with oil, radically changing lubrication properties of the oil. You don't want to mess with the bottom end of the engine.

Thanks
Thanks guys and gals,
I will change the oil with dino and then back to synthetic in a little while. It does suck that I screwed things up again. We shall see if there is any change in the way it runs. thanks for all your help bob c |

Good idea on the oil change. I've heard that even small amounts of water can cause damage to an engine's bearings.

Well I changed the oil
THis time I am running delvac 1300. Not the synthetic stuff. Just to purge it out. A noticable difference in the cars performance. It actually feels slower with the dino in it. It was cheap though. Just 11 bucks at wal mart. I will drive it for this change and then go back to delvac one. THat stuff is good stuff I recon. Thanks again. bob c |

You did the right thing, but I really doubt even two or three oz's of coolant are going to muss up two gallons of oil that much.
I imagine the oil came out just as black as ever, hmm? But it was a good idea to change it, cheap insurance as someone said..

Yes the oil was black and not at all frothy.
I looked under the oil cap and no sign of froth. But I do feel that I did the right thing. It proves to me even more that delvac one is some good stuff. Please no oil thread. have a great weekend I wont get to see the mosley fight. I think that it will be a good one. bob |

What would be approximate cost for replacement of vacuum pump and hoses for W124 diesel (602 engine)?
Sorry for off topic question. |

Sheer speculation to close The Bob's thread:
I suspect that you found no froth because you had an engine full of fresh oil with all its harmful chemical fighting additives still intact, in spite of the usual black color. If the car had been almost due for an oil change when the coolant got into the oil, it might not have absorbed it nearly so thoroughly, and the new oil which was in there would have had its contaminant-absorbing properties severely compromised for the rest of the time it remained in the engine. So I still am convinced that you did the right thing by getting that stuff out of there.

Well alls well that ends well.
The pump and the hose were about 300 bucks. It took about 2 hours to do. Just a hint. Remove the upper radiator hose and allow ti to drain fully before removing the vacuum pump. Thanks for the help bob |
