Pic Needed! w123 300D Ashtray area..

Not the ashtray, but the ashtray, er, compartment, in the lower dash.

I have this clip. I was putting my radio in when I first got the car and the little brass colored, MB stamped clip falls out, just one.
I never saw where the heck it came from.

So I'm lookin in an 83 300D today at the salvage yard, and happen to pull the ashtray, and low and behold, there are those two clips, to the left and right top fo the ash tray housing. So I grab them, go out to put them in mine, and mine does not HAVE the same place for the things to clip into! Not the same at all.
I don't get it, or I'm not seeing something.

These little brass colored sping/clip dealys sound familier to anyone?

For what it's worth, I don't have a clue what you're talking about :D.

Wolf_walker, they sound familiar to me but I'm not 100% sure. I can take a photo of mine to compare, but please tell me exactly where you need me to take the photo. Can you post a photo of yours and maybe then I'll have a better idea of the area you're talking about?

I'll photo mine, but basicaly it's the upper side of the hole the ashtray fits into.

300SDog 03-14-2004 01:12 AM

Yeah, those brass clips are electrical contacts for the cigar lighter..... they rub against the ashtray edge and make contact when the ashtray is open. Will be back tomorrow with pics from '79 240D if nobody beats me to it.

Its a ridiculous set-up.... only equalled by stupid placement of the ashtray that trashes the radio.

wolf_walker 03-14-2004 02:37 AM

I agree about placement, but I don't actually use my ashtray. And I know that contact, and that isnt the part I'm talking about.
I'll go photo mine in a few minutes..

This is the under side of the ashtray that I'm wondering about.
The 300D I pulled the clips from, which I know mine had somewhere in there, has spots for them one on each side. Mine looks to be smooth. Hence my question...

That solid black cover it seems on the top, is where the two clips went on the 83 300D in the yard. What gives?

I just looked at the ashtrays for the 300CD and the 240D. They look exactly like yours. Your mystery clip is nowhere to be found. Maybe it came from somewhere else and your car's PO stored it in the ashtray where it eventually fell behind the cover?

I could buy that, and had, untill I saw the same area I photo'd in that same year model 300D in the salvage yard yesterday and it HAD both the clips right where I took the photo of. I have to go back to the yard next week and yank a couple of cruise amps, I'll take a second look at it.

Could the clip be higher up, under the radio maybe?

lietuviai 03-14-2004 01:52 PM

I would almost guarantee that that clip is for the radio and not the ashtray. I recall seeing some clips when I swapped out the radio. I haven't had a chance to get in my 300D yet and take a better look.

that clip was used to hold the original radio in place, there was one on each side. since you have put in a aftermarket radio, you dont need it anymore. they are usually removed when a aftermarket radio is installed anyway because they interfere with fit.

Alright, question answered. Thanks guys! :)
