tick, tick, tick, tick (you get the idea) from speedometer
That's right. When driving down the road a tick has developed. It's coming from my speedometer for sure. If you look closely, you can see the speedometer needle bouncing ever so slightly, not as bad as most MB's when their doing under 20 though.
Is there a place I could send my speedometer to to get fixed? I have heard about VDO shops in the vintage forum, what do you think? I am only 700 miles away from 200,000 so I can't get a different speedometer because I enjoy having higher miles that are somewhat accurate. My cable was broken for about 1,200 miles so it technically has 200k on it now. Please let me know what you think. Thanks David

I suspect it's the gear at the dash end of your speedo cable and not the speed itself.

Have you removed the cluster recently? If so you probably pulled a little cable forward which may have caused a bind then this may happen.

So how would I fix this, "bind"? I have pulled it out many times recently and can't always get it to seat correctly. It only does that tick thing on the way to church on Sunday nights and on the way back. I think its possessed personally. It's not doing it right now and hasn't since Sunday night. It did the exact same thing last Sunday then stopped on Monday morning.
Thanks David

Just pull the slack of speedometer cable out from the firewall side so it doesn't have to bind anymore. Mine is making the noise only at speeds over 57mph, I just have to remember to pull it back a little bit to get it to stop.

Mine started the same way about this time last year. Ticked intermittently for a while, then one cold Feb morning, it started screaming at me about halfway to work. And I mean SCREAMING ...Ended up pulling it and it was the gear mentioned earlier. I sent the whole cluster to Williams Speedo in AR and they did a perfect job, including replacing bulbs and repainting the needles. The only thing I was a little disappointed about was some dust they left inside. Had to take it back apart and clean that myself before remounting. Can't remember now what it cost, but I can find the ticket/phone if you need it.
Side bonus was that my ACC started working again perfectly after the rebuild. Oh yeah, they tag it with odo reading and service date so no questions come back to haunt you later. TC
