Instrument lights

This has probably been discussed here a zillion times but I am new so let me ask this question again, on my 123 240D 1977 the instrument lights are pretty darn dim to a point that friends riding in the car ask why have I turned my instrument light off.
One MB shop recommends replacing the existing 2W bulbs with 5W, is this a good idea?
My dimmer has been replaced a while back but the new one made no difference.
Appreciate any comments.

Thanks,
Vahe

Previous postings suggest that higher watt bulbs are not a good idea, as they often melt things. The dimmer is a rheostat and can be eliminated or simply bridged by a wire soldered across the terminals. That will take care of the dimmer corrosion and loose fitting contact; and will return the lights to their original bright condition, which by the way is not very bright. Some have advocated going to an LED replacement for the bulbs. Check the archives for other postings on that idea.
