The original hubcaps on my 240D have plastic pads on the spring-clips so as to not scratch the rims, which look like painted steel wheels but are actually aluminum alloy.

yikes, with a 2,88 rear and overdrive it would have a hard time maintaining speed on level ground!

I've often wished for a LSD rear end too. With my 125 HP I am always breaking the back end loose on my 240D......

...not.

Okay, so 2.88 is too tall - I guess just the 5-spd then.

The LSD is for snow/rain.

I thought the car was Limit Slip by default?

Limit slip for the rain doesn't make sense to me on this car. As far as snow goes I'd say studded hakkapeliitta's and if you really want to some sand bags in the trunk.

If you get one wheel on ice in a W123, you are going no-place fast. I can get mine stuck in the driveway if I have a slick spot.

It is. There is only enough power to produce limited slip.

I've never had a problem, but I run studs in the winter.

240D Dreams

5 sp tranny would be a must, a couple of well placed cup holders and auto adjusting valves ... Otherwise my W123 fits my needs perfectly!

300d isnt half as simple and is abit heavier than the 240d, i would take a 240d with a 5spd and 617 turbo than a 300d with a 5spd

5 spd is all these cars need. It would make all the difference in the world if you do any highway driving. Other than that, it is perfect as it is if everything works. I love mine other than the 4cyl vibration.

Vibration? It should be smooth as glass? Did someone do engine work to it?

I have a 240 in the garage right now that I'm tempted to do a gonzo build on. New liners, .8mm over pistons, head work, balanced/blueprinted, etc.

If there were someone out there who would pay for such a creature..., I would...

Yes, when i bought the car, the drivers side mount was shot and the bracket was sitting on the crossmember. I bought a mount at autozone and installed it. It helped a little. The next week i replaced the pass side mount with a oem mb mount and that made no difference. Two weeks later i replaced the one under the oil pan and the tranny mount and it seems worse now.

Im not much for NA diesels, but a 240D for '08 or '09 I might consider. Of course it would have to have a turbo, no one would accept the speed of the old 240 in today's market, plus, its just plain dangerous given the power of the vehicles on the road today.
