Injector return lines (?)
 

Was putting some new glow plugs last night on my SD(what fun that was!:rolleyes: ) Then I started the engine to make sure everything fired off ok(it did). I was looking the engine over to make sure everything was tight, ect, while the engine was running. Then I noticed fuel was dripping from one of the small hoses that jumpers from one injector to the other. I assume they are the excess fuel return lines. When I wiggled it, I got more than just a drip!! :eek: Shut the engine down fast. Pulled the line off, and the end was all rotten and splitting. Checked another one, and saw the same thing.
So, my question. Is this hose anything special? Doesn't apper to need to be high-pressure hose, but assume it needs to be something like a fuel line-type hose. It has a cloth outer covering, which I don't recall ever seeing on standard auto parts store fuel line.

Sounds familiar. I found the same thing when I did my GPs a month or so ago. Fix it fast! You are losing so much Diesel and money. A search will give you all the info needed to buy and install the return lines. It is very easy. I found I had to go to a MB Indy for the parts, or get it from Fast Lane. AutoZone and such do not have the right fuel lines in my experience. You will not believe how your mpg improves.

Ya, they are special. I would order from Fastlane, Rusty or the stealer. You will need about a meter and its not expinsave. I use a big pair of neddle nose plyres to put them on and it sounds like getting the old ones off wont be a problem. I wouldnt fool around trying to jury rig something.

Thanks guys. I'll not mess with it, and just get the right stuff. Luckily I have another car to drive(the trusty Audi), so I can leave the SD parked until I get it fixed right. I just stuck on a couple pieces of hose I had laying around so I could park it last night.

go with the oem hose, btdt. also there have been a couple of threads very recently on the same subject. do a search and all will be revealed! :cool:

On the end injector there is a plug. It look like a hose with a plug in it.

Would one have to buy that plug at the last injector?

I usually do the search thing, but didn't remember anything about these hoses lately(I keep up here pretty well). But good point. I'll take my own advice, as that's what I always tell others to do too:o ;)

think Charlie means on the last injector hose there is a metal plug which you can re-use.
keep the old hose as a guide.

Went down to the german repair shop I've used for things I didn't want to tackle(such as rear wheel bearing) and they use hose that's actually for Volkswagons. Same stuff, just way cheaper, at $1 a foot. Soon as the guy saw what I had in my hand, he said "Injector return line?", and in 2 shakes I was on my way.:cool:

Now that's good to know. $3 per meter sure beats something like $13 I paid last time. Thanks for posting, Rick.

The stealership, and maybe the FSM too, claim that all you need is a meter of return hose.

IMHO, a meter is barely enough. I don't like the way the return line between #3 and #4 cylinders gets so close to the throttle linkage so, I like to have a wee bit more line to route it away from the linkage.

I bought 3 feet, and it worked out just perfect. Had just enough for all of them, including the line that goes over to the tee by the fuel filter, and the plugged one at cylinder #5. The one that goes under the linkage slips into a holder, and seems safely away from everything. But at only a buck a foot, I may buy more next time just to have extra.

Yep! Thats a lot of hose, but the price is good. You need someone to share with for that much hose.
