Oil change
Since I drive a lot ( about 3000 miles each month ), I need to change my oil on the 1st of each months. Will it hurt the engine ( diesel ) if I change the filter every other time. I did that in the past with my 240DL volvo ( gas )which ran past 200,000 miles and still going. Thanks...

You drive 3000 miles a month!!? Well, with that kind of mileage, I would imagine that's all highway. If that is the case, you can go 5,000 - 6,000 miles between changes. That would cut down on your oil costs. As far as skipping filter changes, I wouldn't recommend that. The big difference between you Volvo and a diesel is soot. You need a fresh filter to catch this stuff.

The OEM oil filters used in old Mercedes diesels do NOT filter soot at all. If you keep changing your oil every 3 Kmiles (highway), your engine is pretty clean and I believe you can change the oil filter every other time.
The major reason why you should change oil frequently on diesels is because you want to remove the soot being suspended in the old oil, due to the fact that oil filters are not designed to trap soot. Soot particles are too small for them, but they are harmful enough for engine innards if the soot concentration in the oil exceeds 2% (That's the maximum allowable soot limit for MB diesels). Eric |

I don't know if it will hurt the engine or not, but why risk it? It's relatively easy to do and the filter isn't unreasonably expensive. Seems silly to go to the trouble of changing the oil, but not put a new filter in. I agree with RJ in that you can probably stretch out the change to 5,000 and just change the filter at the same time.

I agree with habanero. Spend the $6 and 5 minutes.

Better yet, switch to synthetic and change your oil and filter every 10kmiles. You'll provide your engine better lubrication under almost every condition, and save money and time in the deal.
And with that amount of mileage per month, I'd be tempted to sample the oil and go for 15kmile changes, if analysis proved you are ok. 240Joe |

I change the oil every 3000 miles, oil filters every 6000 miles.
I have been doing this for the past 5 years. David _________________ 1985 300D Turbo |
