I love my 240D...and my wife!!!
I had a good laugh today....
My wife, today, for the first time, was in the 240D. She is NOT a fan of old cars, especially diesel's! She does not want to be bothered with cars...simply get in and go from point A to B. It took me months to get her used to the W116 (our first Diesel). She finally came around as the interior is/was first rate! She also had new found respect when I drove the car to Newport Beach (from San Francisco) and still had 1/2 tank of fuel. We preceedes to shuttle 3 couples around for the whole weekend! So, as I was musing about the attributes of the 240D, trying to justify my insanity for going from a perfect SD with 130K to a 240D with 315K miles... Wow, can I make a short story long!!!! Anyway, she noticed the 'lack' of acceleration. To her comment, I said (paraphase) 'You have to realize that this car is almost as heavy as my SD, but it only has 4 cyl. I asked her to take a guess at how many horsepower this car has... Her response: "NOT ENOUGH" I laughed out loud for at least 2 min!!!! Whatever anyone says, I am a BIG fan of the ole 240D! Also, I named my car...the previous owner who lovingly cared for the car since the early 80's was Reinhold Gerber. I may have spelled this wrong as I do not have the service records in front of me....so my car is called, Reinhold! Welcome Reinhold!!! Anthony

Which route did you take? If 5, how did you do on the grapevine?

Yes, I took the 5. The grapevine southbound, at the end of the first major grade required a shift into S, near the top. Other than that, D the whole way. Fortunately, the weather was cool, so not issues with overheating, in fact, the car never reached 100 (212F).
Great cruiser! AC

Acastell,
Why would anyone go from a low mileage SD to a high mileage 240D? Opps. I just read the word insanity. That must be it. P E H |

I'm a big fan of the 240D too, and its lack of power is one of the things I find charming. And whenever I want more power I just hop into one of my 300D turbodiesels, but I find myself driving the 240D at least as much as the other cars.

There's a guy around here who has a late 60's or early 70's 220D. It's a pretty neat looking car. I've never personally talked to him, but according to a friend who is aquainted with him, he says 'it takes all day to get to 60, but you get 40+ mpg.' Those old 200-240D's aren't too bad a car around here where the road is fairly open and not too busy, but I don't think you'd want to try to get away with that little power in the city. I've got my 200+HP (probably in the 240 range, but I've never dino'd it) Fairlane for the times when I want something to push me back in the seat, but at the same time there's more to driving than jackrabbiting from stoplight to stoplight.

Thanks AC, I was just debating if I'll take the 300CD or 240D. I love my 240D a lot too, and I'll take her to San Diego.
