Why not a WVO diet? The 617 in your 300TD is one of the most WVO loving engines ever built; besides the Elsbett's engine that no one ever produced . Us a WVO conversion kit from Dana and run biodiesel in the start up/shut down tank.

First off, this is a 603 engine in the `87 300TD.
I have four diesel vehicles and one diesel tractor to maintain and I only want to use one type of fuel for all of them. Buying and retofitting every engines with a WVO kit is way more than I want to purchase and deal with besides the pushup of collecting, filtering, and storing the WVO. My hat is off to those who are taking this route and at some point I will get into it but with all that is going on in my life now it`s just outta the question.

soypwrd,

Well said and I wish you luck. I do think that a mineral based HDEO would serve you just as well as synthetic. I have looked at many UOA's and haven't found any advantage to using synthetic except for extreme cold temp flow properies. Also, it takes more resources to produce synthetic. Something to think about.

rogerran,

Soyshield is a product produced by Schaeffer. You can track down a distributor through the website.
http://www.schaefferoil.com/

I have used Soyshield (#139) in my TDI and MB and have experienced a significant reduction in soot in both engines. The oil in my TDI would turn black after about 500 miles after an oil change. While using Soyshield the oil had not turned black after 6000 miles. In my MB the oil would be instantly black after an oil change. After several OCI's while using Soyshield the oil has cleared up and it took over a thousand miles before the oil turned black.

Link to data sheet on Soyshield #139 http://www.schaefferoil.com/data/139.html

Here is a recent UOA on the TDI, notice the zero soot and very low wear metals:

2001 Jetta TDI, manual
6/28/03 to 2/21/04
6247 miles on sample
51239 miles on unit
