Things to do while engine is out.

I am planning on swapping the engines from my '80 300D to my wife's '82 300D and vice versa.
What should I consider doing to the engines / drivetrain / front end, while I have it all apart?

I would fix any oil leaks you have on the engines while they are easy to get to. Especially look at the rear main seal since the engine has to be pulled or the trans dropped to fix it if it does start leaking. Other than that just clean them up really good.

Tony.

Replace the gaskets between the oil filter and block and the seals on the turbo drain tube.

OH for a Turbo

P.E.H. There do not seem to be any W123 300D Turbo Diesels in Oz that I have been able to find.
Pity though.

I would consider checking the IP timing now, so you will know if it needs adjusting- if it needs adjusted it is way easier to get to the bolt from hell when the motor is out.

Look for rust and any erosion trouble spots in the engine bay walls.

Sway bar mounts, oil cooler lines, of course all engine seals that are a PITA with it installed.

Tony,

I always think all the 300D engines are turbos like they should be.

If I had my engine out I would attempt to put some sort of heavy duty sound absorber/deadener on the firewall...

Steam clean the engine bay and suspension parts that get grimey from leaks from the engine.

Thanks all, I will check on each of the suggested items.
Keep sending in the ideas though, I plan to take a couple of weeks off from work to do the swap, and hope to end up with an excellent car for Mrs and a good one for sale too.

Tony,

Take off the starter. Disassemble it and the solonoid and clean everything good. Lubricated the bearings and bushings lightly.
Check the brushes for wear and replace if necessary.

Put the starter back on the engine and test that it works OK buy connecting it to a battery and cranking the engine.
