Alda Nightmare... beware

I picked up an '85 300D a month or so ago... real nice shape... Drives/Drove real well until I started messing with it.

I noticed the Alda had already been adjusted and it looked to me like it was most of the way out. As a baseline, I screwed it in a few turns and something snapped... there is a little spring in there that was disintegrated.. Bottom line is I have no Alda, no boost, and virtually no Turbo.

Looking at the archives, seems my options are as follows
1) get new rebuild Injection Pump since the alda is calibrated to the IP and it is not available as a separate part.
2) Go to an authorized Bosch shop and get them to calibrate the IP and hopefully put on a new Alda.
3) Try to find a used one and hope it will work...\
4) Plug the hole and hope for the best and try to forget...

Anything I'm leaving out?

Your best bet is to find a used ALDA from a junkyard. It's pretty easy to remove. You need a 24mm wrench to grab directly under the ALDA and channel lock pliers to counterhold the lower nut.

You can get a brand new ALDA if you give the Bosch p/n to a authorized Bosch diesel injection shop. They are around $350new and they have to order them. I second the thought of picking one up from a junkyard.

Hmm.

Hello Mark Herzig
Sorry to hear the sad news.
Alda is one of the items where my best advice is; if it is not broken, do not mess with it.

Unhappy

... I second that advise... just 48 hours too late ... It's an expensive mistake, sad to say. And because of the resale value of these cars, hardly work an expensive fix.

I will probably try to get a new replacement part on Monday and then figure out how it can be calibrated to my IP. One thing that keeps me up at nite (another fault) is when my cars are not right.

thanks for the support all.

At this point you have little to loose, the junk yard part is cheaper.

An alda is only an enrichment device bolted to the MFI pump. Buy a good used one and install it. Start at any point and keep track of your adjustments until you are happy with the way your car runs.
The advice I got through this forum outlined the procedure I use. Turn it in (CW) one quarter turn at a time until a power loss is felt taking off from a dead stop. Then adjust out (CCW) one half turn or as much as a full turn.
Please don't be discouraged in your future tinkering. It's fun and may help in getting a better picture of how these powertrains work. Gather information, understand the function, and tinker away.
I just read a post here where some guy saved a bundle of $$$$ by adjusting the vacuum controls on his transmission to correct shifting problems. A shop had told him to replace/rebuild his trans.

The problem I see with the '85 300D is the additional line that goes to the transmission vacuum shift point regulator. I don;t think Alda's prior to '85 had this.

Anyway, I need to give a good college try to finding a used '85... I saw a service on the internet that locates used parts but they wanted a fee to do so.. Any ideas on how to locate a used Alda?

My first stop would be a salvage yard and ask them to try to locate one for you. They'll call around if they don't have what you need and it doesn't cost you anything to do that.
