Help, what is this and why would it bubble oil when the motor is running?!

1979 240D, 616912 motor.

I first noticed this when I bought the vehicle. A puddle of oil in the depression. I cleaned it out and now that I am running the motor the puddle has reformed.

What is this and how do I stop the leak?

Thanks

Thats a cover that screws in and gives access to the top of the geared shaft that turns the oil pump. check to see if its tight. There is a rubber o ring down inside that might have to be replaced. You might be able to use a little sealer in the plug.

79-240d-project,

This is also a popular place for spilled oil when adding or changing oil, or leakage from the valve cover gasket, to collect, along with any other fluids (like Diesel fuel from a filter change or leaking injector bypass lines). I have never noticed a leak there coming up from below, and I am not sure there is any oil pressure there to cause the O-ring seal to leak. But I have noticed it full of oil now and then, cleaned it, and had it reappear after one of the kids added or changed oil, or after the valve cover gasket showed other signs of leakage. I would check some of those possiblities first. Good luck, Jim

I checked for leakage at the valve gasket, no leak. I cleaned the depression out and with the motor running could see oil bubbling up out of the bolt threads. I checked the bolt and it is tight so the gasket must be shot.

Any known issues with removing this bolt and replacing the gasket? How about torque settings when replacing it. Anyone know the part number for this gasket?

Thanks,

Jeff

Try #126 990 01 40 (washer) and #621 997 00 40 (seal ring). The 126 # sounds odd, but MB will use supercede #'s even across models.

Its a threaded "cap" and you should be able to just unscrew it using a socket. If you cant seal it there is a "set" bolt on the side that must be removed before you can remove the "sleeve" with the O ring.. You remove this "set" bolt then screw the "cap" back in half way or so and pry the sleeve out (the cap is screwed into the sleeve) where you will see the O ring. Not sure, but I would assume oil should not be going past the O ring so sealing the cap MIGHT not be the way to fix it. Do you have a manual?

I have been watching E-bay to find some real manuals. All I have is the MB Maintenance Manual which covers general stuff and a Chiltons. The Chiltons is not very good. Both of these came with the car.

I wish I could find MB manuals for the motor.

The o-ring in there is toast, and you are starting to get some blowby pressure at speed.

New o-ring will fix it unless the blowby is getting pretty bad.

On the gas engines, that's were the distributor is. The fitting is so that 1) it's possible to put a bushing on top of the oil pump shaft and 2) so you can install a mechanical tachometer (that no one has ever seen, to my knowledge).

The reason that I am familiar with getting into this little cap is because I installed the little oil pump drive shaft UPSIDE DOWN when I assembled the engine after I rebuilt it. Had to pull the shaft out and end for end it so I could get oil pressure. You dont need to pull the shaft out to replace the O ring which is on the sleeve. Shouldn't be a problem. A Haynes manual would be nice to have for the pics.

Peter

I have always wondered what good it would do to try and turn the oil pump from up there as you would have to pull the timing device before anything would turn and pulling that with the chain in place would be a bugger or am I missing something?

Steve
