M103 to 0M602 conversion??

Hey all!

The county I live in just implemented emissions inspections and the old '88 300TE (with 300K on the bottom end) is going to have some trouble..... That and the price of fuel has prompted me to consider putting a normally aspirated 2.5 out of an '87 190D into it (making a 250TD of sorts).

Assuming I can get around the legal issues, has anyone out there tried anything similar? The fuel feed and cooling system issues seem straight forward enough, but what about engine mounting and electronics (mainly the ignition switch)?? I have two complete cars to work with.

How about it? Any thoughts?

Thanks! Klaus

Not sure on the ignition...

Mounting - you may want to see if they offered a 2.5 in the 124 as an option in Europe that year. If so, the mounting has been engineered - you just have to find the parts.

Do you have a provision for driving the SLS pump? I know on the W123 they are mounted on the head, so engine swaps from sedans aren't possible. Is the W124 different in that regard?

Thanks for the replies....

Rick, the hydraulic suspension is driven by the power steering pump and appears to have the same mounting arrangement on both engines (physical differences aside). That shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Sloemoe - they did offer a 250TD wagon in europe at the same time, and of course the 2.5 turbo sedan here in the states. Hope I can find those mounts in a junkyard....

As of now, the biggest prob looks to be legal. I'm in the process of talking to the DOT and will let you know the outcome.....

Klaus
