The article claims, "Some high-performance auto engines have a similar feature where an oil squirter nozzle squirts oil onto the bottom of the piston"

Indeed, high performance auto engines like the 617.95!

Thats really, really awesome!!! Id give up my pre-med studies to work in that plant!! Just imagine seeing that cranck turn!!...
reminds me of a time when I was able to tour the engine room of a ship called the Jeremiah O'Brien, while the engines were in operation. This WWII era cargo/support ship (known as a Liberty ship) was steam powered, with an open bottom end engine. If you can, try to imagine 2-3 floors tall connecting rods going up and down before your eyes. Incredible sight.

I read about one of those big engines being able to take the heads off (one of four at a time) and doing a valve job without shutting the engine off.

Thee was an earlier thread on this same engine. You'd think some travel agency could make a bundle putting together tours of motorheads like us to see one in operation.

Which one now?

As far as removing the heads, are we talking about the steam engine or the diesel?...

I remember on the Jeremiah, the piston was enclosed in this chamber with a hole in the bottom to allow the huge connecting rod to pass through. In this piston-chamber, steam, pressurized from onboard boilers, would force the piston down from above. Then, from below, steam would force the piston up. The huge connecting rods went down, from the above piston-chamber to an open carank-oil-pit, directly over which the lower walking platform was. If one of those rails failed, you'd be ground up in a giant crankcase for everyone to see Its happened.

The 14 cylinder consumes 1,660 gallons of fuel per hour at it's most efficient power setting (I wonder if they use any additives in the diesel fuel). The displacement on it is awesome,
1,556,002 ci, or a 25,480L engine(I wonder how a diesel purge on it would go?). The HP is outstanding. 108,920HP. And best of all, it's TURBOCHARGED!
