what happens when bowden cable runs out of adjustment?

My bowden cable appears to be turned out all they way. It sometimes has a slight flare between 3 and 4 and wanted to turn it, but can't. Is it just that the cable is stretched or is the tranny on limited time?
Thanks
David

You want to adjust the vacuum modulator if it's flaring. The Bowden cable controls shift points based on throttle position.

It only does it 3-4, and I have a subscription to pindelski and he lists the 3-4 flare a reason to turn the shifts earlier with the bowden. If I adjusted the modulator that would make all the shifts harder and I think they might get too stiff then. Anyways, I need to get a vacuum gauge like Tom P did on his site and really get mine to where it should be. Anyone have any good pointers with adjusting the throttle stops? On his site he doesn't have very good pictures of where to measure for clearances or exactly what to adjust.
Thanks
David
