Starting up after fuel sys work
 

Seems I always have a hard time getting all the air out (616) after working on the fuel system. Crack the injector lines, (fill the secondary filter),pump, pump and more pumping on the hand pump. You know the drill. Anyway I just installed an engine and was a little concerned about the quality of the fuel in the tank, (car sat for 3 yrs) even though I pulled the sender and peeked down in the tank, drained some fuel out, it looked good. But I rigged a "fuel bucket" with hose to the primary filter.... and she FIRED RIGHT UP without even cracking the injector lines. I was totally astonished.... This engine has been sitting for 2 or 3 months and when ever I had worked on the fuel system when it was in the other car I had to tow start it, then, it would always start and run just fine. Anyway just thought I would pass that along, now if I can find a midget to change my clutch master cyl, I'l be back in biz:D

For future reference, anytime you do serious IP work, ALWAYS apply vacuum to the shut off solenoid and watch to ENSURE that the stop lever moves. If it does not, DON'T START THE ENGINE. This means that the governor is not captive and the engine will run away.

Also, the easiest and quickest way to start one of these engines after dry is to hand pump, loosen all injector lines at the injectors about a half turn. Have an assistant crank the engine until you see fuel dribbling from one or more injector lines. Tell them to stop and tighten the lines from which fuel is dribbling. Repeat until fuel has dribbled from all and all have been closed. You were lucky this time, but follow the method and you can start one, even with a weak battery.

Because you were big enough to post your sad story, I now have my bolt cutters right close to the L/F fender.

I have always cracked the lines at the injectors and got engines to start except this engine when it was in the other car. Three times I had to call the neighbor over, and have him tow me and even then she took a long time too start. Like I said the engine is fairly low miles and had been well cared for, starts normally real easy.
I think there was more than luck, I think the bucket of fuel above the engine had something to do with it. It fired up with very little cranking and no cracking of lines...only several pumps of the hand pump. I know what it normally takes to get that engine going after messing with the fuel system. I normally dont have a problem except with THIS engine. I would not like to run outa fuel with this car:)
