OT. Ford Escort Diesels

Anyone know any about them? I found a stash of them for sale. He wants to much money but Im sure they will sit at his place for a long while.

Im thinking one of the engines would be awsome in a little Suzukie Sammuri 4x4.

The three that I worked on made awesome paper weights.
Personal experience; they had more issues than the original Escort gas engine.
If he is asking more than $100.00 each I would LOL.....

I think they were Mazda engines. IRC, they put a 2.2l in the Escort (and maybe the Tempo?) and a 2.3l in the Ranger for a short period of time.

I'd stay away simply 'cause I don't think that finding parts for them is exactly easy...besides, I think they're an aluminum head/timing belt setup. If I wanted something like that I'd take a VW diesel

As far as swapping a diesel into a Samuari, a 4BT Cummins could make for a fun ride

The Cummings is to heavy. The VW is awsome and swap kits are available. Finding affordable VW diesels thats a different story. I looked for a whole year and then gave up.

My books show the diesel engine was made by Toyo Kogyo, a company that is affiliated with Mazda.

Heck, do you have a cheap source for Cummins 6BT rebuildable cores? My truck could use a repower

BTW, Geo, it's Cummins, not Cummings. At least you didn't try to say that they're owned by Ford

Nope, no Cummins, but I run up on VW's pretty often.
Father just put a canadian 1.9L IDI turbo motor in my old 82 Pickup, not cheap, but a heck of a lot of power compared to the 1.6TD.

Those engines were made by Toyakoya (I don't know how it is spelled, but that's how it is pronounced) and they are good engines.

But, they have timing BELTS. The engine is NOT freewheeling, so change the belt up front!

If you are interested in putting a diesel in a samarai there are kits available for putting VW turbodiesels in them. I don't know where to send you, but if you did a google search I'm sure you'd find it. Larry

I think the best diesels you could find in Japanese vehicles were in Nissan pick ups in the early to mid 80's. They came in two 4 cylinder configurations a 2.2L and a 2.5L. These were push-rod engines that had gear driven cams and the IP was a Bosch licensed version. With this combination you can go for many 100's of thousands of miles. They were a bit slow but once you got up to speed, you can have no trouble keeping up with everyone. They also came with 5 speeds. You can easily still get parts for them from the Nissan dealers. You can get filters at many car parts stores. I know because I used to have one and my dad now currently owns it.

I am an old ricer I owned a few Datsun Roadsters and 510's. Right now I drive a very very ugly Maxima Diesel. The engine is based on the 6cyl Datsun Z engine. It also is a diehard diesel from what I understand. Parts available for the engine. To bad the body is a piece of rust. An unwinnable war. If was winnable I would have not bought my 300D. Actually I found the 300 while looking for an affordable donar Maxima or Z car to switch my engine into.

I still would be an MB nut though cause of my MB Unimog with the 617 in it.

Are you thinking of putting the diesel engine into a Z? That would be interesting. I didn't think the 6 cyl version of the diesel engine was based on the Z gas engine. I thought the 6 cyl diesels that were put into the Maxima's were also the same type used in the International Scout which was just actually a variant of their marine engines. They were good engines anyway you looked at them. They didn't require too much maintenance and they keep on running.
There was one interesting thing that I noticed when looking through the FSM for my truck that I had. The diesel 4 cyl engine only had 3 main bearings for the crank. I've never heard about one breaking a crank but to me this was the only weak link in the engine. The engine itself was all iron, including the head. It was extremely simple. I kind of miss the truck I had but I guess I can drive it anytime I wanted to as long as I went back down to SoCal.
