Sorry to kind of butt in, but I have a question. I have a 1995 E320 Wagon which is a European spec car. The vehicle was purchased with 39k miles on it. It now has 52k on it. I can't remember if it has always done this, but upon takeoffs, especially when cold and in cold weather, it does this: Put car into drive, engages o.k., very gently accelerate on flat ground, no problem. Come to end of street, stop in drive, must go uphill a tiny bit to pull out onto highway. Much steadier acceleration is required here, but not hard. Just for a second the engine revs then goes into gear fairly hard. The trans shifts fine after this through the rest of the gears. Coming out of this same street and accelerating hard results in higher revving for a second and then the car "slamming" into gear. Not so hard as to slam you in your seat or make you feel uncomfortable, but very noticeable. Sometimes after car is fully warmed, well, it usually doesn't do this at all.
Here are some other things with the trans. Engagement from drive to reverse is quick and smooth, about 1 second. Shifting into 3rd at 50 results in a fine downshift; never had problems with this. However, for the first time the car was floored while going 40 mph. The engine revved to 6 grand before actually engaging the gear and moving briskly ahead, but there was no slamming into gear this time. It was like for a minute the car was in neutral. Since the car has been owned, the trans fluid has not been changed. It has been checked and was topped to the correct level, however. It will be changed by an indie with the filter very soon. Will this solve the problem, or is there some kind of adjustment / replacement which needs to be made. If the trans needs replacing at 52k miles, that is rediculous.
