Will future EPA regs prevent me from ever owning a 123 diesel again?

I read an article in Car and Driver recently about how EPA standards set to come out over the next few years will be so stringent that current diesels may not pass.

Will that kill my dream of someday owning a 123 diesel again? Any grandfather clause?

At least in Colorado, all new emissions standards do not apply to older cars. There are different standards for older vehicles.

This is true in most states as well, so the 123 MB should be safe to own at a later date.

They can't come to your 100 year old house and say you have to tear it down because it doesn't meet 2004 construction standards.
Good thing, most 100 yo houses were built better than today's houses except for the pumbing and electrical.

Seems like the no expofacto laws would cover it.

BUT, the old gassers don't meet the latest emission standards either. Are they going to outlaw all of them too?

I do not think they will go after the old gasers since there are so many of them. It is the law of the jungle they go after the weak.
