engine oil storage - fire safety

I have no separate storage or garage.

Is it safe to store engine oil bottles in a room where I study and sleep?

My building has strict fire safety regulation. They prohibit use of candles, halogen torchiere lights, etc.

I am asking this because there seems to be price benefit if I buy oil in volume. Shell Rotella T synthetic blend 10W-40 is $55 per six one gallon bottles. But I need only about 2 gallons at each oil change.

From purely a safety point of view, it is probably unwise to store spare oil in your room. But, from a practicality standpoint, I don't see too much of a problem keeping clean, sealed bottles there. If you use hair spray or household cleaners they are probably more of a fire hazard than the motor oil.

don't see why you can't store them in any room. would not leave them right on top of a heater though, mite melt the plastic making a nice mess!

on the other hand a good diesel oil delo 400 15/40 is abt $6 per gal at walmart.

I think you're gettin screwed on that Rotella. I swear you can get a six-gallon case at Sam's for $35something.

I don't think Sams has the Rotella SB, at least not around here.

P.E., that is "dealer" price. You need a Preferred Customer account to get that price.

I imagine the vegetable oil you use in the kitchen poses a greater danger than the motor oil stored in the pantry. Then there's vodka, rubbing alcohol, cologne...

Candles and halogen lamps are ignition sources, which is different from combustibles. This may be the difference in the regulations presented to you.
