Filter on the Suction Side

Larry Bible recommends a filter on the suction side of the compressor when renewing a/c systems. I'm envisioning a screen of some sort that is incorporated into one of the O-ring seals? Just a perception of my imagination.

Can someone describe what this "filter" looks like? I'm having my suction hose rebuilt and I believe someone stated that the filter needs to be incorporated into the rebuilt hose.

On the 123 chassis that big suction hose has a rather pronounced bend to it and I'm wondering if this "filter" will interfer with the fitment.

Want to post a JPG of the filter?

Thanks,

ee

Sorry I don't know where to get the filter or have a picture of it.
How much is it costing to have the hose, rehose if you will. And are you redoing all of them?

You only need a suction side filter after catastrophic compressor failure, not really necessary for any other repairs. A catastropic compressor failure puts nasty, metallic debris all through the system and will destroy the new compressor if not removed or filtered.

There are several types of suction side filters. You should talk to your auto a/c shop and see what they can provide. There are screens as you describe that are available as well as other inline filters.

Good luck,

The suction hose immediately before the compressor and the discharge hose will be rebuilt. Going to San Diego in the next week or so and found an a/c shop that does lots of work on metric cars. About $45 to $80 per hose. (no clamps, it will get done right).

I also found two places in AZ for about $30 per hose.

The hose between the hi-side fill valve and the condensor is $45 new from the dealer. This is the fat hose next to the alternator.

The blue hi-pressure hoses that connect to the R/D are OK.
