Nick,

2% is about 2 oz, per gallon so a quart to a tank would be about right. But 2 oz. per gallon is just an arbitrary number I picked. No visable amount of smoke more than straight Diesel fuel with the 2% mix. I read here where some guy uses a 50% mix of Diesel and used engine oil. Seems to me that that would smoke alot.

I also use the used engine oil in my chain saw, no not in the fuel mix, but for bar lube. I save even more than using it for fuel because new bar lube is $4 a gallon. It makes the saws dirty looking but I have never plugged an oil pump.

I used heating oil a long time ago. I couldn't tell any difference using it. I used some that was about 10 years old and I still couldn't tell any difference. I chuckle when I read that some guys go especially to a truck stop so they get "fresh" fuel. Gasoline is better fresh but Diesel fuel does not deteriorate like Gasoline.

At one time Agway deliverd tractor Diesel fuel and it was just heating fuel with an green additive that the delivery man dumped in from a gallon bottle. They called it Agway "Green Diesel".

I got the filter cloth from where I worked a long time ago. I have no idea what it is called or where to get more. I would think cheese cloth or the filters sold by Greasel for WVO would work. I wouldn't advise that the oil should go right from the crankcase to the fuel tank. It should be filtered first. Also I don't use the last inch or so from the bottom, its kind of gooie down there.

I look at that 15 gallons of used oil as worth about $25. That's about $15 less that the AAAAAAAArabs get.

Nick,

The answer to your initial question as to why Diesel is so expensive is, Capitalism. Basically they have it and you want it.

The price of Diesel will continue to rise until the cost per mile is the same as for gas cars or until there is a major revolt among consumers. Taxes have very little to do with the difference between the cost of gas and Diesel. Gas is considerably more expensive to produce but Diesel is becoming more popular. In Europe 35%+ of the cars are Diesel: in the States it is just less than 5%. MB is planning on introducing a new line of Diesels through Chrysler in the next few years.

These cars will probably get 40 mpg at 70 mph. I drove a small MB Diesel in Germany 2 years ago and it was the neatest thing I have ever driven. It would run 70mph+ all day at about 35 mpg. And quiet and they come.

Vegatable oils are the way to go. You can usually get it free from your local Mega-Burger. Transfer it from one durm to another through a drum pump with a 10 to 20 micron filter and mix it 25 to 50% with regular Diesel and you will save a bundle. My next door neighbor has 3 Mb 350 Diesels that he runs on fry oil. They are rigged with fuel filter warmers but here in S. Texas he doesn't use them.

There are methods for converting various kinds of fats and oils to Bio-Diesels but they require a geat deal of effort and produce a caustic rich by-product that must be disposed of. Any fat/oil that is liquid at room temp is useable as a fuel if it is filtered correctly. I have a 10 micron filter on the drum pump I use to fuel my tractor and generator. I use tax free red Diesel for them but the amount of junk in the fuel is amazing. Stored Diesel also tends to grow fungus which the filter will remove.

Just filled a 5 gal jerry can with diesel today from a truck stop with the most competitive prices on fuel. $1.69/gallon, regular unleaded, $1.69/gallon.

NickMendoza,
I got the peanut oil from my gun club, it was new in the container just several years old. Since it smelled good and was really nice an clear I just poured it in the tank. Trying to get hooked up with a local restaurant so I can get their WVO. That will obviously be filtered and maybe washed too. RT

When fuel is as costly as bottled water [1.00 per liter] beer [1.69 per liter] and colas [1..39+ per 2 liters ] we have a legit gripe

I think this may be a legit gripe. Aside for beer, I think most of us buy more diesel that any of those drinks.

I've heard that diesel is comparitively priced to high-test because there simply isn't as much diesel fuel produced. With less of it out there, the price remains higher than one would think it should be. I've always wondered.

As reddog said, there's no real difference except the dye itself. Problem is, again as he said, it's big-time illegal to be running the stuff. An M-B's not as likely to get a "tank dip" as a semi or even a pickup truck is, but even still...IIRC, the fine for being caught with red diesel (regardless of how much is in the tank) is $1000 for every gallon of capacity. That would mean about $22K for running red diesel in a 123, and $38K for running red diesel in my truck

What's the minimum ambient temp that WVO can safely be used (either standing alone or mixed with regular diesel) without a heating kit? The only reason I'm not running WVO right now is the cost of the conversion kit, and it does stay pretty warm during the summer around here.

Thanks!

A place near where I work has road diesel for $1.49 a gallon (I filled up last night), but I've seen a wide variation in prices in the OKC area: $1.49 up to $1.72 a gallon.

Regular unleaded gasoline is running about $1.55 a gallon and 91 octane is about $1.78 a gallon. Those are fairly consistent prices for the area.

I just paid $1.699 for Sunoco "Premium Diesel" in Orefield PA, north of Allentown.
Same station was at $1.719 for unleaded, $1.919 for premium, and $2.019 for Ultra 94.
They sell K-1 kerosene too... $1.559 or $1.599 I forget which...

One fuel I have never seen discussed is Kerosene. Can diesels burn that?

Not only CAN they burn it (known as #1 diesel), it runs much cleaner and has a lower gel temp than #2 diesel. Is used as an antigel for #2 in the winter.

At $1.55, I'd be running that instead of #2.

Better yet, it will do a bang-up job of antigelling WVO at a 50% blend, so go 1/2 and 1/2 Kero and WVO for a LOT less than #2!

What is WVO?
Can I filter and use used Canola oil from our deep fryer?
Coffee filter? Cheese cloth? Decant the clear, then toss/filter the rest?
It's been in the 40's here lately, last frost May 15th, if that helps.

WVO is your canola. Waste Veggie Oil.

Filter it with a veggie oil filter (or cheese cloth, etc.)

It will gell if not anti-gelled or mixed in high concent with kero.
