Hey,

I basically cannot search for this top as I do not know what the problem might be.

Here are the symptoms:

1983 240D 175k (oil changed every 3k and valve adjustment was done 4k miles ago) Car seems perfect except this:

I keep hearing this popping/pinging/ringing noise coming from the engine. It occurs sporatically without having a pattern. It basically starts from 20mph till about 50mph and then it goes away. It only does it as I am accelerating.

It does not affect the performance of my car as far as I am concerned but big problems start from littles ones and that is why I am trying to figure this one out.

Please help.... if you need more info about the problem please post it

Sounds like it might be 'nailing.'

Try using a diesel additive like Power Service and see if things improve. If not you may need to do a 'Diesel Purge' treatment. If that doesn't work, rebuilding the injectors may be necessary.

if rebuilding the injectors would be necessary would I be able to just change out the "Injector Nozzles" ?

Dunno on this. Rebuilding injectors is most definitely a job for the pros with the correct equipment. Rebuilding may or may not involve new nozzles.

'Problem could be related to Injection Pump and engine timing. Since the IP is hooked to the timing chain, it would be prudent to make sure you don't have some chain stretch (wear) issues. If you have never changed the timing chain, you are most probably due. Since you're not hearing anything at idle, it will be difficult to troubleshoot. But making sure everything is as close to specification (timing) as possible will give you a good basis for other more progressive (expensive) changes, like rebuilding or changing injectors.

The above items are great. And I would do them in order listed. Because the first are easy to complex and more cost.
If you buy rebuilt injectors make sure they are "pop tested" and within 5% of each other. The quality control on these leave a lot to be desired.

You may want to take a length of rubber tubing and listen for an exhaust leak. They have an irksome habit of being loud while under load and almost disappearing while at cruise or decelerating.

problem found.... as I am doing a diesel purge today I noticed a long bolt (about 7 inches) sticking out of something and hitting against the engine. it turns out that it was the airconditioning bolt just dangling there and hitting against the engine...

thanks for all your help guys....

wish my fixes were that easy...
 

Seems to me that on my car I wouldn't find the bolt until it took out the power steering pump and maybe a oil cooler line...;)
