w116 rear dash removal?

How do you remove the rear dash on a '79 300SD. I am trying to remove the rear speakers and put in larger ones so I might have to cut it. I posted in the tech forum, but I thought there would be more of us SD owners here.
Thanks
David

David,

I assume you're talking about the parcel tray behind the back seat? If so, remove your rear seat, bottom and back. Remove your speaker grills and speakers (they will be screwed into the decking and the metal beneath it). I can't remember for sure, but I think you have to pull the FAid Kit out, too, if you still have it. The remaining decking is masonite board with the fabric cover. The whole piece will slide out; make sure you bring it out straight and don't wedge it. If yours is like mine was, now is a good time to recover the shelf. My board was shabby, too, so I got some masonite from Home Depot, ordered wool fabric (not cheap!) from Hirsch, recovered and reinstalled.

The holes are relatively small, so if you want more bass, you will have to investigate. I wanted to retain the original look, so I opted for a set of Fosgates that fit in the existing holes. The sound is much improved over original, but not as good as what you might get from a 6X9. Cutting out will NOT be any fun, though....:p

Good luck!
TC

I agree with you about the cutting. Except fopr one small problem, my stock rear speakers are 5". Not 5 1/4" like a normal car would utilize. So I will at least have to drill some holes.
Thanks
David

I think the 5 1/4 speakers will fit. What I did in my 240D is I put Legacy 6 1/2s in the back tray and put a 12in sub in the trunk, now its got great bass

Why would you want bigger subs in your 240? Bigger speakers/more speakers means more weight. Which means it's even slower.
That would be something new around here, a sound system in a MB diesel that is louder than the idle.
