I don't think a gear ratio change is going to solve your problem ,sounds like it's running way to rich ,have you checked for chain strecth, IP timing, valve adjustment, had injectors tested?

MB engineers didn't chose the gear ratios for there diesel cars with a dart board. My SD's get from 24 to 31 you really need a log book an acurate odometer and many tank fulls to get the real number........

This is very true.

However note the national speed limit at the time these cars gear ratio was chosen. MB upped it in 85 for a reason. The older one's are right in the torque band at 55mph or so.

How about the Euro models anyone know what ratios they run ? I don't see much difference in mileage in My SD's at 55 or 75 .I would think that a higher ratio might tend to lug in a lot of situations...........

I seriously doubt you have an aftermarket turbo on a non-turbo engine, although it is possible. Much more likely is that the PO installed a turbo 617.95x engine in the older chassis. Should be easy to check, just find the engine number stamped on the block.

Any number of things can cause low MPG. My 1984 was getting 18-20mpg when I bought it, and after fiddling with everything, it's up to a whopping 23-25mpg at best. It should be 28-30mpg on the freeway but it just can't do that. Check to see if brakes are dragging, timing chain stretch, IP timing, wheel bearings, clean air AND fuel filters, etc etc etc...

So yea, no. While I was doing tierods and draglink/damper I saw the engine number.. it was 617.0xx. Maybe I'll take some pics of the setup... why does it seem so unlikely that they added an aftermarket turbo? There's no ALDA, no idea how much boost, etc.
