Power steering power

Tried searching, but didn't get much. How do you assess whether or not the power steering is putting out full power? Asking now that I have two SD's to compare, one steers much lighter, and looking for reasons why the other feels so heavy on the wheel.

My limited experience has with the pumps is, they either work or they dont, no half way. Your problem my be in the suspension. I take it you've checked fluid level, filter and belt tension?

It could be just the tires. Different kinds of rubber can make a noticable difference in many places.

Which steers lighter...the one with the stock wheels and tires or the one with the boulevard wheels and tires? How do the front tire inflation pressures compare between the cars?

The one with the stock wheels is the heavy steering one.

How much maintenance history do you have on the car? Are there records of the PS filter and fluid being changed on schedule?

Zero records, and from the state of the car I'm guessing minimal maintainance. There are jury rigged and ripped out parts all over that I'm still trying to figure out what the loose wires should go to.

It may be that the PS was not maintained properly. There is a small, donut shaped filter that sits at the bottom of the PS pump reservoir and it is scheduled to be replaced every 30k miles, if memory serves. Typically the PS fluid is at least partly changed at the same time. Check the archives and you'll find what you need to know. It is a simple, cheap service that may restore proper steering feel to your SD. What about the front tire pressures?
