Unhappy Insurance Anyone?

I've been fighting with my insurance company about insuring my 300SD. They want to charge me the same amount as my other vehicle that would cost 12,000 to replace. When it comes down to it they would consider my car totaled at ~3,000. The agent says they can't do anything about it it's the "Benz name". I mean it's not like a luxury boat or something where I would expect to pay $1000 for a starter.........OK I digress.

Where do you get insurance on your benz and do you consider it a good deal?

Thanks,
Stephen

PSD,

Why don't you just not put collision on the older MB. I've been doing this for years and by now I am way ahead. Should something happen, I can pay for it out of my savings over the years. After all, a $3000 car is pretty much expendable.

I get my ins from The Hartford thru AARP even though I'm not a member. 3 MB and the pickup cost me $471 a year.

I just spoke to my State Farm rep who informed me that coverage on an '83 300SD will run about $20 more per 6 months than I currently pay for my '86 Buick Grand National.

I thought that was reasonable......

I would highly suggest...if you believe your car is worth much more than $3000, have it appraised by a reputable party. This could be very very helpful in the case of a battle with the insurance company.

Good Luck!

I pay $78 per month on my TD with state farm. I'm 18, out of school, on my own, and the only driver.

240Joe,

Insurance, that's when a company screws you when you pay them and screws you again when they pay you.

PEH,

Oh, the old double penetration....thanks...that's why I don't have it!

You know I'm kidding, but both of my diesels have liability only, but an 18 year old driving/abusing one of them, which triples the rate.

$2,680 a year for the SDL. No collision, but theft, and I think a few other things. No tickets, one accident but it wasn't my fault. (In the Toyota not the MB!) But I'm 18, so it's going to be higher, in another two years hopefully it will drop.

$2700 a year!!!!!!!!!!!! I thought I had it bad. I have 3 cars insured. It kind of goes like this.
1967 VW Dune Buggy (fiberglass body) titled as R-title Bug.
$200/year 3 month lay up for winter, liability only
1991 Subaru Legacy
$250/year year round coverage, liability only
1985 300SD
$250/year 3 month lay up for winter, liability only

3 cars=$700 year

I got married last year and my wife since added 2 cars.
1998 Ford Escort (full coverage)
1997 Ford Expedetion (full coverage)

I have also upgraded the Benz to full coverage.
My bill is now $2100/year for 5 cars.

I upgraded the Benz because I got a letter from the PA DOT. It seems that when I bought the car they thought I paid too little for it. ($3000) I paid the taxes on the $3000 and went on my way. 2 Months later I received a letter saying either send a copy of the bill of sale or send them the remainder of the tax money. They valued my car at close to $7000!!!!!!!!!! I kind of got a kick out of it. I knew it wasn't worth that much but I sent them a copy of the bill of sale and kept their lettler.
In case my car is ever totaled I will be armed to do battle with the insurance company for replacement cost.

I think it's $3600 for 4 cars. Only two of which have full coverage. The 240D is $800 because I have a teenage driver. They require that they be listed as a driver on at least one car. In two years, I'd have paid more than it's worth.

Yes, we live in a no-fault state and yes, it's a racket.

Not so Bad?

Well......... now I don't feel quite so bad, my rate is ~$470 a year for full coverage. It just doesn't seem right that my truck is worth 4X as much and costs less to insure. Also I have passed the magical 35(not by much) and my rates should be lower than you youngsters. I still remember paying those outrageous rates at 18 with a couple of speeders on the record.

I just bought the car 2 months ago so maybe I will hedge my bets for a while with full coverage.

P.E. must be ancient with the rates he is getting :p

Thanks for the perspective.

Stephen

$3500 per year for a 300D, 300SDL, 560SL and a 2000 Nissan Quest. It was half that before adding a 16 year old driver.

State Farm insurance, full coverage (Mom wants it and she pays it so who am I to argue? Told her she can do liability if she wants....) on both vehicles, Located on MS Gulf Coast. I'm 19. Been in one fender bender (insurance blamed it on me), was rear-ended by a pastor with a suspended drivers license and no insurance (my rate went up to pay for medical bills)

Insurance runs about 400 a month for 4 vehicles. Mom and Tom's 2000 Yukon and 2001 Sebring *together* cost $97 a month. My '79 300SD and '95 Mazda pickup take up the rest. The SD is around 80-90 a month, as 'Mom drives that vehicle'. The Mazda has the rest.
