Bowl style diesel fuel filters?

Hi folks-

Has anyone considering replacing or supplementing the diesel fuel prefilter with a bowl type filter?

These filters filters particulate matter, but more importantly allow water and big chunks of gunk to settle at the bottom, which can then be drained without removing the filter.

Most of them appear to have either a cheap paper or nice spin-on type replacement core.

Anyone used these?

I have just bought the Racor 500FG, turbine filter like you describe. It will be used primarily for Veg Oil in my MBZ.
It has 2 micron replacement elements which are $7 online, the spin Racors have elements which are 3 times as much.
I will post my findings here asap.
The Greasel folks have been selling Racors for quite a while to the SVO folks, I assume they find them successful.
Ebay is the cheapest place I have seen for this type of filter.

The Racor filters on Greasel.com are way more expensive than what I need.

Where did you buy your 500FG? I found one for $150 on go2marine.com. That's a lot.

They look to be about $60 on ebay.. good deal!

Thanks!

I have replaced the small filter on both the 300D cars with a large CAV filter .
It sounds just like the one you refer to . Replacement elements are about $6.
Saves the main ( expensive ) filter some life , I think.
Any extra filtering is good insurance I think .

Howdy,

I just bought a 500fg with a metal bowl from go2marine.com. Great service and pretty good price.

I like the 500fg because the filters are inexpensive and they come out the top. For my application, a spin on filter will be difficult to remove.

One thing about the 500 series comparred to the 245: The 500fg does not trap nearly the amount of solids as the spin on series. Basically the 500 series is a small-ish filter and a huge water trap.

But then again it is very easy to replace the filter cartrige. Also, the housing is built like a tank.

I think one thing most people are having trouble with the 500 series is the inlet/outlet ports. I think I will have to buy the threaded adapters in order to make it work.
