Wasuchi, I don't know if it makes any difference, but the car in the photo is a CA model. Its one of a few photos I sent wolf_walker of my vacuum lines.

There is also something on the later turbo's that is related to the EGR soomehow, I just saw it mentioned in another thread, forget what it's called. There are several odd and end differences on the 85 300D that were a last year thing it seems. I'd really like a definitive list of them, but have found none. lietuviai, that eally sounds like a valve body problem, that shift timing issue. But...

Well if its a valve body problem I guess I'm half way to a rebuild. In the previous rebuild, the only thing that I think was rebuilt was the clutch packs and bands. Today it acted up in the 2 to 3 shift also. I wonder if anybody has tried to rebuild their auto transmission themselves. Would it be worth the trouble? I have the ATSG manual and it doesn't look like it would be that hard.
I have called wrecking yards around my area recently looking for parts for my car and no one seemed to even have any 300D's so a getting a used transmission doesn't look like an option. I'm trying not to lose hope again.

My car has done this for the past 50k+ (since I bought it). The trans was rebuilt not too long before that...
I have managed to fix it somewhat by pulling quite a bit of slack from the bowden cable, and also increasing my shift firmness two clicks. Still shifts smooth if I feather the throttle a bit at the shiftpoints, but if I dont or its cold it shifts a bit hard. Ill probably go one click softer soon because of that. Still has close shifts but not as bad as before. My car is mecahically solid as far as I can tell, and I get 27-30 mpg, so I dont think anything is too wrong inside. FYI, I had it under control once before and it was shifting great, then all I did was change the trans fluid and it was shifting terribly! So it might have something to do with the friction characteristics of parts of the trans, if not the fluid itself. All in all, I wouldnt worry about it. That doesnt mean Im not going to post my own tranny question shortly though. JMH

I'd just like to state again, as many others have, that I really dislike this tranmission and it's shift control methods.

I am rebuilding my trans right now. I suspect someone was been messing about with this trans before. I am missing 2 springs in the valve body, as per the drawings in the ATSG manual. I made a socket to remove the tri-flange on the tail shaft.got a 30mm deep well on sale for $3 and cut away some of the sides to leave 4 tangs on it. I am in the process of making a spring compressor to remove the clutch return springs, would you belive a piece of 2inch pipe connector. I have already cleaned out and reassembled the valve body, it was really full of ------ stuff. I would bet just cleaning out the valve body would have fixed my problems, oh well I'm in to deep now.I was surpprised at the amount of dirt in the valve body, I had just changed the fluid and filter a short ime before and it was pretty clean with almost no stuff in the bottom of the pan. What problems you ask. The trans worked just fine when it was cold. After warm up it flared really badly going into 3rd. and even worse going into 4th. I had to let off the throttle to get it to go into 4th. Cruising along on the freeway if I let up on the throttle it would drop out of gear and I'd be coasting. It would go back in gear with a pretty good thump if I got back on the throttle. Oh and the pump started to leak at the O-ring. If you are going to attemp to rebuild your trans make sure you have a clean area to work in. A couple of those big metal drip pans seem to work well on the table to keep every thing together and the mess to a minimum. I clean all my part in a solvent tank full of Jet fuel (I have a source) use kerosene. a good soft brush is helpful. If the parts have to be really clean i.e. the valve boddy parts clean them off with brake cleaner then blow them off with compressed air. you will need some assembly gease, make sure it disssolves away. so it does not clog your filter or gumm up the works later. I got the rebuil kit with the new friction disks it was only a few dollars more. Probably did not need the new disks, the old ones are in good shape. Wow my english teacher would be appalled at the construction of this blurb. I'll let you know if this works out. Good luck.

true, but the thing is that after replacing the fluid (which was always clean and looked fine, no metal bts, etc), the shifts changed. Is that a bad thing? Probably not, just inherent to the fluid.
Good luck tweaking, its always worked for me (with a lot of annoyance in between). BTW, rusty often has MB rebuilt transmissions for $1600 As far as I know, a rebuild will cost that, and so maybe its worth it to have one that was apparently done by MB? JMH
