190DT Keeper?

On one hand its was free, My father in law bought it for my daughter. On the other hand it needs a new AC (compressor and several other components gone, $2800 est.) and the transmission is suspect.

The last time we had the transmission serviced we found parts of the friction band in the pan. It's still running ok, but...

We've spent 1700 on it during the last year, could'nt think of a safer car for the money for my daughter to drive and she like's the car. But these last two problems could be budget busters.

Thoughts?

$2800 on a car worth $5000+ (If it's in decent condition) is worth it. By the recent threads you can see that you have a very rare, and much sought after, car. If you don't want it you should offer it to some forum members.

I would offer to buy it myself if we were not 1200 miles apart.

You could always drop it off at my place for free - along with the title and keys of course.

I'd love to fix the AC but I think I need to wait to see what the transmission is going to do. The PO said it was rebuilt around 170K, from the stuff comming out of the bottom it doesn't look like it was rebuilt well.

170K is about normal for a re-build on the tranny. They're not easy to do--if a standard US shop did it, it could be due again. The trannies are the weak point on the turbo 190D, imho.

As far as total value, if you add the tranny to the A/C, it's getting up there in cost. Is the rest of the car primo?

The rest the car is great. I don't get to drive it much, my head hits the roof, but my daughter's still likes it (I've bonded with my 300D)

I put some weatherflector visors on the windows so driving with the windows down would be more comfortable.

The transmission's working fine now we're just keeping an eye on it for now.
