exhaust leak

1 Attachment(s)
I searched the online manuel and found some info but the diagrahm has no names to the pieces and parts, so I'm not sure what to order or if it might be localy found/made (no dealer local).

Leak is under air cleaner area and before the exhaust pipe makes the 90deg. bend that aims it toward the back of the car.

There is so much leaking I cant see a thing when the car is running when from underneath or with air cleaner removed. I do seem to remember though it was not leaking from the upperside of the metal bellow that connects the turbo to the exhaust pipe.

Any suggestions?

ohhhhhh I should add. I think the motor mounts are wiped out. The rear air cleaner bracket is broken off as well as this exhaust leak below it. This is making me think bad motor mounts causing exessive shake rattle and roll making the exhaust leak as well as the air cleaner's broken bracket.

The only thing I could find on that part was that its called the adapter fitting.

They have same parts as fastlane, and less pictures. All in all still not enough information for dumb ol' me to desipher what I might need.

I plan to dig into this further today. Was thinking here on line I might could get a head start on what to look for and/or some names of things so I can identify where I find the leak with the right term.

FWIW. Check the corrugated tube in the downpipe. It could be cracked. The crack might be hard to see since its corrugated. I've seen it happen before.

ok...... so I should have looked for the problem WITHOUT the car running LONG TIME AGO LOL. This one is easy. I jacked up the car little more than what I have before. Crawled little deeper under the car and looked up in there wiht a flash light. This is what I saw.

Its not sepperatd as much in reality as it is in the drawing. Anyway.. the down pipe is 125buks...... any other potential effective backyard solutions that are cheaper?

Ibe300D 04-11-2004 02:55 PM

Wow, 125 bucks?? Hmmm, you cant use just anything right? It must be able to stand up to the heat....Try a chimmney/fireplace supply store, they may have some kind of metal tubing for routing chimneys. Or try rain gutter materials...Just some ideas.

I had a similar problem last year. Start with a small crack on the accordian portion of the header pipe, then the crack became bigger and the noise louder. Finally I replaced this header pipe.
Very easy to replace.

easy is not the issue cost is. Wonder if a short piece of the flexible exhaust tubing purchasable at most cheapo autoparts places could replace this corrugated section just fine? I dont see why not.

What is the OD diamter of the exhaust tubing of the down pipe anyone know?

Eric Eliel 04-12-2004 01:03 AM

No you can't go to the local mcparts or home depot. I believe its stainless, flexible and metric. Take it off and have it welded.

Its probably broken because the motor mounts need replacing, the trans mount needs replacing and maybe the rack dampner pin for the IP needs to be updated. Start with the motor mounts.

Looks familiar. Happened to the 79 300SD. The new tube looks promising, instead of the acordion style, its a mesh pattern. Is it any better?

coachgeo 04-12-2004 07:27 AM

If I can find the right size I was thinking of having this welded on in place of the corrugated section. They used this stuff in doing the custom exhaust on my Unimog. I'm in podunk now and not sure if I can find it here like I could in OH.

I figure I will more likely end up using a section of this http://www.bikernet.com/garage/images/pipes003.gif

OD?

Does anyone know the OD of the down pipe that this corrugated section is attached to?

Thanks in advance

Sorry for off topic question.

Some people advise to replace the entire exhaust system all at once rather than to repair sections at different times.

When they say this, what belong to "entire exhause system"?

Rear and mid muffler? Or from header pipe to rear muffler? Or from exhaust manifold to rear muffler?
