Bad 240D Camshaft - anyone have one?
Hello,
I want to buy a good used, or new, cam and cam tower bearing set for a 1981 240d automatic. It is the newer style engine, numbered 616 912 12 956336. The cam must be from 616 912 12 035 or higher numbered engine. I really appreciate it. P.S. I did post in the parts section, but hardly anyone seems to visit. Sorry if posting here offends anyone. If it's taboo, I won't do it again. Thanks, Adam Bush |

Adam
I had to replace the cam on my daughters "78' 240D. One lobe was worm WAY down. I got cam, towers and rockers at a yard in Seattle (U pick) for $100.00. The PO had neglected to adjust the valves for tooo long.

I'll check my engine number when I get home but if it's late enough, no problem.

Any hints on where to find the engine number?

240 newbie,
Hello. The engine numbers are just behind the injection pump on the left side of the motor (divers side). Also, The other way of determining whether the cam is the hardened, improved performance type is to look at the tower bearings as well as the rockers. The bearing towers of the type I want are angled slightely below the cam down to the head bolt on the passenger side, and the rockers, if you look close, have a seperate nickel plate welded onto the upper rocker face. I also now need a oil pump, as it seems that's what went bad and caused these other problems. Thanks so much, Adam Bush |

Hello everyone,
First, thanks for the help. I found a rebuilt 616 motor with 30k on it for 180 bucks. I spoke with the shop that rebuilt it and was happy to find out that it had cost the guy 3500 to have it rebuilt. It turns over with much more compression than the one I have in the 240 i recently got off EBay. I think I'm going to slide that long block in this weekend because I am suspicious of worn rod or main bearings as I put in a different oil pump and cam and oil pressure came up for 30 seconds, then went back down to zero and wouldn't budge from there even with a little rpm. I confirmed the lack of oil pressure by not seeing any oil from the rail on the top of the cam that I also got used... I'll post a pic sometime soon from when I pucked the car up in Raleigh. Thanks, Adam Bush |
