Why do I have an AiResearch turbo?

While disabling my EGR with a block off plate this evening, I noticed that my turbo is not the usual KKK or Garette -- it is an AiResearch T3 (marks on compressor).

Is this an aftermarket turbo? Why is it on my car?

Sadly, I have no vehicle history.
