center vents

Okay... so I got tired of the center vents on my '84 300D not working, so I decided to just remove the flap inside the vent box behind the dash so they would work all the time. All went well until I didn't catch the flap fast enough and it fell down - I assume to the bottom of the vent box, correct? Or where did that bugger go? Will that cause any problems? The air come outs the center vents great now, so hopefully that flap down there won't cause any future problems. Short of tearing open that box to find that vent flap, I figured it would be best to just let it go. :p

Some of us here, myself included, just dropped a piece of wire or something into the vent to hold the flaps open. It wasn't necessary to remove it, sorry.
Can't help on where it went.

It is probably sitting on top of the heat exchanger. I've had my heater box apart. There is not anything yo have to worry about with what you have done. the motor is off to the passenger side and will not give you a problem. You may here the flap move around with the blower motor on but it can't hurt anything.
But how did yo get the metal flap out? I had the box out of the car and removing the cneter vent flap required removing to the side pivot points, pulling the actuator arm off and then removing the flap. Was this done with the unit in the car?

To summarize no you don't hav a problem. Its sitting on the heat exchanger and can't get to anything

Dave:
After chewing up my hand trying to work the flap out, I just took a screwdriver through the dash vent and punched the flap. Crude I realize, but I figured I could always use the dash vents to adjust flow without the flap. I just wasn't quick enough to catch the flap before it fell to the bottom.

you might be able to get it. try taking out the glove compartment. pull the rubber cover off and then try to fish it out that way.
careful, vac hoses /wires all about in there .
disconnect the glove compartment light so it doesn't short out

Here a picture of the unit out of the car. the metal flap drops down to the heater exchanger and that is where it will sit. Try a magnet on a string that might work. Be careful not to "poke" with an object. the heater core is where the flap is sitting and you don't want to cause a leak.
