Johnson Controls is owned by SEARS at last report.

http://www.johnsoncontrols.com/

http://www.johnsoncontrols.com/bg/

As per my research, Johnson Controls inc. produces 84% of all automotive batteries sold in North America today.

Batteries they make are:
Diehard
Interstate
OPTIMA
AutoZone
PepBoys.
Varta Auto Battery
HOPPECKE Automotive Battery
FORD.
GM.
Mercedes Benz.
http://www.autobatteries.com/
Etc.
Etc.
Ad nauseoum.

Sears owns controlling interest in Johnson Controls inc. at last report.

I'm very happy with Battery Warehouse...

...as far as I know, this is a nationwide franchise, but they can get a wide range of vehicle batteries (have used them for my 6v Packard, old VW, and the 3 M-B diesels), which have a long life and reasonable cost. My BW will also recharge and check low batteries gratis.

Worth checking out.

I've had very good luck with the group 49 battery from autozone. Its less than 70, and has a 7 year warranty as PEH said. First 2-3 years is replacement. After that its prorated. Not a bad deal, especially after reading some of the prices mentioned here!! I didn't even know anybody sold batteries with a 3 month warranty.... thats just crazy.

As far as jumpstarting goes, make sure you have good connections, let the other car idle for about 10 minutes and you should be good to go. Done this quite a bit with my 2.3L mazda pickup, and its got an itty bitty battery in it.

In the midwest there is a battery chain called " Just Batteries" or something of that nature. All they do is batts. I like to change mine every 6 to 7 years and they know what type to furnish. Have had very good luck. Janesville, Wi.

Damn.. 200min at 25A... thats impressive

lets see... $70 every 5 years or $340 every 10... I'd rather stick a few of the $70 ones in the back and wire them all up together but that is one high performance batt if there ever was one

Optima batteries have a great reputation but I've never ponied up the extra bucks for one.
Cold Cranking Amps and availability of service are the most important things to me.
I scanned over something about marine batteries. Don't go with a marine battery. They are designed to provide a slow constant discharge (like using a trolling motor) and then give enough ump to start the boat. We need a lot of ump up front.
I may get a lot of grief over this but I usually buy my batteries a Wally-World. Most batteries are in fact made by the same manufactures and there's usually a wally-world in every town you pass through.

I've jump started a diesel schoolbus that had a completely dead battery with our Expedition. Took all of 15 minutes. Jumper cables with heavy gauge wires, and letting the battery charge for ~10 minutes before even trying to start the car seems to do the trick. I don't think my 300D would be harder to start than a bus

Go to the benz dealer, hopefully you have a wholesale hook up, and buy the big black sealed battery. Its the same size as your diesel battery but sealed. I put them in all my cars. They are like $200, but they are great batteries, better than diehard int'l. Im sorry, but I dont have the part number, but tell them you have an E55, they should bring out the correct one. Just say, the biggest black one.

there's an interstate wholesaler in Lancaster, PA where I've been getting my batteries for the past few years. De-branded interstate battery, 1100 CCa, says VARTA on the side and made in Spain. $40. And they load test it before they carry it out for me. Haven't had to think about batteries for a long time and I quasi-frequently leave the ignition circuit on for hours, or a door or trunk open overnight.

My money goes to a Optima battery. I've had mine for 6 years and it has lasted three cars.

For the money it's a winner.

My 240TD came with this Carquest battery. I haven't had it long enough to give an opinion but am posting it as another possible local sourced battery. The guy I bought the car from was an ex Mercedes mechanic and he said this was the only battery he used.
