A/C vacuum actuator diaphram part numbers
I need some A/C vacuum actuator diaphrams. I need the part numbers however so I can compare prices. What is the part number for a diaphram?

The diaphragms are not available separately from MB or most MB parts houses. Only a couple of suppliers offer replacement diaphragms. Geroge Murphy at Performance Analysis is one of them. For most MBs there are two kinds of diaphragms - the kind for single chamber actuators (footwell, center, diverter) and the kind for dual chamber actuators (defrost and recirc).

Like Sixto says, only speciality suppliers. Here's one:

**sigh**
Murphy's diaphragms work on the single-chamber pods of a certain size only, for example the center vent pod on the 123 and 124 chassis. His kit will NOT work on the smaller size pods like the 124 diverter, or any of the 124 footwell flap pods (early or late). For the dual-chamber pods, only the front half (small lift) diaphragm is replaceable. The rear (large lift) diaphragm is not replaceable, and GM's mickey-mouse "kit" reduces pod travel significantly. Of course he won't tell you that. Photos are here: http://www.meimann.com/images/mercedes/W124_dash/ Translation: Buy entire new pods. |

So in other words, it will not fit on my W126?

In other words, his kits may repair one or two of your pods, and repair one-half of the 2-chamber pods. Any pod that requires significant effort to R&R, or any that requires dash removal, should be replaced - NOT repaired - if it is a 2-chamber pod! You CAN NOT repair the rear half (large lift section) of the 2-chamber pods properly with GM's kit but he sells them anyway...

W126 A/C service
So, will I be able to buy and use new diaphrams for this little DIY project, or will I need to buy new actuators? -Joe

As Dave says, the inner diaphragms are so-so effective. It takes a while for the acutators to open/shut the flaps completely if they even get to that point. It takes a few minutes for the SDL defrost vents to close completely in AC mode and I don't think the recirc flaps ever close completely.
Can't beat the price, though. Both kinds of diaphrams that a 126 uses are readily available. Sixto 95 S420 87 300SDL |

The GM diaphragm kit for 2-diaphragm pods restricts motion of the actuator rather severely, I'd say almost in half (I didn't measure though).
Single diaphragm kit - $5 + S&H Dual diaphragm kit - $10 + S&H Entire NEW pod = $25-$35 + S&H Time to replace each pod = 30-90 minutes, depending on which one You do the math. I think it's poor economy. If you need to save that much, you might want to consider getting used pods/diaphragms from salvage yards (seriously)... |
