can a headgasket leak oil to overboard?
Hi,
On my 83 turbo, I have an oil leak at the rear of the engine. It definitely isnt the valve cover gasket; it comes from lower down than that. I think its the head to block seam that leaks, and it leaks around to the drivers side of the block as well. Is it possible to be thru the head gasket to overboard? The engine runs great, but does leak a minor anount of oil (1-1.5 qts/4000 miles). The problem is, it leaks delvac 1, so it gets $$$ I dont see any reason to do a head job, the car runs and starts great. But, Id like to stop the leak. ANy suggestions? I had the dealer do the oil filter housing about two years ago, but could that be the culprit again, causing leaks in that area? The only thing is, it looks oily above where the housing mounts, right up to the head/block seam. Any info or suggestions would be great. Thanks, JMH

I would pressure wash the area you suspect again, then observe. I think it could be the head gasket based on what you describe, though. Perhaps yyou could simply view it as your own custom rust prevention system.

Check the oil feed line from the oil filter housing to the turbo.

Do you mean the flange where the line attaches to the filter housing, or do you mean the actual construction of the line itself? I can't imagine the line getting a leak in it itself, but you never know... Are these lines all one piece from the filter to turbo, or is there a middle connection, perhaps behind the engine, which could leak?
How much of a PITA is it to replace the connection of the filter to turbo oil line? Is it like doing the turbo drain gaskets, i.e. no clearance and lots of tricky, annoying work? Thanks! JMH
