Nobody answered this, so I'm going to make an educated guess based on VW TDI experience. It has glow plugs, but you don't have to wait. At 70*F, the glow light on the TDI is barely more then a flash. Even on a 5*F morning when I was in CT, it was only a 2-3 second wait for the glow plugs. Then it fires right up and zoom-zoom. The fuel metering is that precise.

Problem though: if it does'nt run like a diesel, and doesnt sound like a diesel, can it really be a diesel?
At least does it smell like a diesel.
Maybe after 5 years when I can afford one it will smell like a diesel.

It's partially Mercedes fault as well. They didn't think there was enough market to sell diesels from 2000-2004 which is why we had a 5 year dry spell. They could have brought them into 45 states but chose not to. The Federal/state/EPA/DOT/CARB regs are a nuisance but only part of the issue.

Even for the years they did bring them to the USA (through 1999), we only got one or two models per year, period! Across the pond they have DOZENS of diesel models to choose from with every imaginable engine and chassis combination you could ever want. You could get a W124 with an OM603 turbo, 4Matic, wagon if you wanted! Or a non-turbo with a stick shift, or just about anything else. Stupid MBNA marketing morons think we don't want choices. Grrrrr....

I that is because the 98-99 E300 didn't sell well...so why would they offer more?...especially in a market so competitive with the luxury makes available...just a business decision

If MB would develop a diesel/electric hybrid or something they can get to meet Crapifornia emission standards they might be ready if/when crude hits $40 a barrel. Toyota's Prius and similar are already enjoying big sales backlogs. I saw a Euro car review on the Deutsch Welle that showed some hybrid diesels, I think MB was involved, I wouldn't be surprised if VW gets into the act first however. Don't forget! inflation (the nasty word!) is coming to places near you, Soon!

Yes it has glow plugs! By the time you insert the key and turn it to start the gp light is already out and the eng just starts like a gasser. The gp light is only a flash you will miss it if you dont look for it quickly. Just like the vw tdis. There is no smoke and there is absolutely no smell of diesel either

Mine smells of Diesel inside right now. There was a puddle of fuel at the pump yesterday that I accidentally stepped in.

I thought there was also a problem after the 2000 model year facelift on the w210. The hoodline was lowered, and the OM606 inline engine would no longer fit. (They should have released a diesel anyway, with a special "diesel bulge" in the hood.)

This is the first I have heard of that claim. I don't think it's true, I'm almost certain there were W210 turbo diesels offered in Europe all the way until the W211 came out. (??)

Yes, that was what they claimed at the time. The CDI engines had already been in service for several years in Europe, so it seemed plausible that the 606 wouldn't fit the new body.

I think the U.S. makes it so dang hard to certify a chassis/engine combination for sale over here (EPA, DOT, yadda yadda) that a company really has to sell a lot of them to make it worthwhile. And that is what is limiting our choices.

Okay so I just did a European delivery on a 320CDI. They are still giving the 7% discount on the EDP for the 2005 CDI so I got it for the msrp -7% this includes the options. A great deal if you ask me and no haggling with the US dealer. I pick up July 29th in Germany. I hope they sell the heck out of this so we see more diesels coming over.
