Tranny shift, as it were... not the same old, please read.
Hey there, I have a 1980 300D. I just put a newer tranny in it about 2 months ago... I got it for $550 from a local recycler. I had it shifting perfectly, with the EGR vacuum line disconnected. Let me describe it's operation:
When cold: start in 1st, always, rev to ~13-15 mph, then shift... hard it partial throttle, soft if more. 2nd goes up to about 33, but WOULDN'T upshift to third if I ran it up to 32 and let off the throttle... it'd just slow quickly with the low engine gear braking. (Easy for me to say) 4th was good at 55, but again, 3rd wouldn't move to 4th UNLESS I got up to 55. When she was warm, the shift points all moved down a lot, and the shifts got a little softer. Last night, I idled it for about 20 minutes, waiting for my GF to get off of BART. When we took off, the tranny was shifting way more like my truck's. It'd shift to 2nd below 10, 3rd around 20 and 4th I don't know when, but WAY earlier... do your tranny's shift like that? It's nice, it's quieter... my car made a hell of a racket getting up to 3rd, and often around town, I couldn't get up to speed to make it there.... howling around in 2nd gear... I didn't mind, but it made me feel a little silly. Also, very important to note is that if I floor it, the shift points more back to normal, 2nd at 15, 3rd at 30, etc, untill I allow partial throttle, at which point she upshifts to easy running. Insight? Opinion? Oh, I had JUST put a green Autobot sticker on it... but I don't think that had any adverse effect. Thanks in advance! Ash

On the 1980
The original transmission was completely controlled by vacuum. When you say a newer tranny what year?

if it has a bowden cable on top of the valve cover try turning it clockwise to produce earlier shifts.

FWIW I love the way my original transmission works in my 81 300 D. First, it starts in first. I know it is not supposed to but it does. I just get it going in first and let my foot off of the throttle - I get an up shift to second. It will stay in second until I lift my foot off of the throttle again. I decide when to up shift: second to third, third to fourth. It’s great because it’s like having a manual transmission. With the transmission like this the car is very quick and fun to drive! If I need to scoot I just give it more throttle and she moves quite quickly, up shifting only when I want it to. I don’t know if other MB diesel owner’s cars drive like this but my mechanic says that’s how the transmission should work. I don’t know if that’s true but I sure like it.

if i get an older mb diesel taxi in germany i mostly notice the driver lifting the throttle for every shift. seems normal over there.

jdc1244, you make me a happy man... I'm not sure what changed, maybe there was a stuck something or another somewhere that freed itself up, but I love the way it shifts now... I gotta say, when I noticed the change, the change itself was alarming. Generally when driving function changes quickly, it's not a good thing. I wonder if idling it for so long could have done something. The temp guage was on 80 when I finally drove it. Does the tranny warm up when the car's just idling? What could cause the different states of function that way? Anyone know these trannys well enough to know? Ash

My mechanic told me that the vacuum lines were not connected correctly and the transmission was not adjusted right. He said he had his 240 D set up that way. I was experiencing some flaring and he changed the fluid and filter and made the needed adjustment. It’s been a blast to drive since then. My “ears” do the up shifting, if you know what I mean. The transmission shifts perfectly when hot or cold. It’s like a new car. Looks like the old transmission just needed some servicing.

On the 77 300d, I love how shifting can be controlled with the throttle. It is almost like a manual transmission on the way up.
There is a big difference when the engine is cold, particularly in the winter. Shift points are much later until the engine warms up.

I'm wondering if sittle and idling for that long somehow bled the tranny. I'd driven it plenty, but never let it idle that long. Anyone heard of this type of procedure being part of R&R on a tranny?

I don't think that idling for a long time would have any negative effect on a automatic transmission but maybe things are different on a M-B diesel trans. If you want to warm up a transmission, usually you have to go through the gears forward and reverse with your foot on the brake.
In regards to the way the transmission shifts on the previous replies, my '85 300D shifts like any other auto transmission when it's working right. I've had some issues lately with it almost skipping third gear under light acceleration. Anyway, when it is working right, I don't have to let up on the accelerator pedal to help it shift but it does sometimes smooth out the 1st to 2nd lurch.
