Parts From Autozone Ok?

I need a new A/C condenser as my ac does not work on my 300 td 1987 wagon, the condenser seems to be spotted from leaks-also i notice a very small leak near the water pump, so i am assuming i should just replace the water pump-is it ok to order these parts from autozone?

Especially if you can get a lifetime warranty compressor from autozone, Id say its an OK deal. Definitely check with Phil here at fastlane and Rusty over at mbz parts, as well as dave over at eurasian (www.eap4parts.com - he usually has the best prices). A lot of times these guys can get you the real deal for a very good price, better than autozone.

But autozone is now offering some good deals with their lifetime starters and alternators, so I have to wonder ifd they have the warrantee on the compressors. If so, it may be a good deal if youre planning on driving the car for another 100+ thousand.

Water pumps should only be bought at the dealer. Lots of other posts where someone bought a napa, etc pump and it was of far inferior quality.

Why would you buy from an Autozone (other than the occasional Bosch part on an emergancy basis) when you have all the knowledge from Phil and the usual other suspects. Autozone will be more money for a condensor and it probably will be from China.

I would suggest you contact Phil or your local dealer and see which part makes sense for your budget.

Listen that is a bad idea, AutoZone makes cheap unreliable parts. Even if they have the huge *WARANTY* on there side, it will not matter. Parts will break all the time, is it worth always having to take them out and replace them for free, when they should not break so easily.

The Autozone wrenches for example break on me and I replace them but also the ones that were replace get broken! So whats the bid hiffy on WARANTY+GARANTEE!???

SNAP-ON tools has that , but their tools work very well.....just my opinion!

A lifetime warranty on an a/c compressor means NOTHING as compared to the extreme hassle you would go through if it failed. A failed a/c compressor requires COMPLETE a/c disconnection and THOROUGH flushing to get all the metallic debris out of the system so that it doesn't destroy the new compressor. False economy IMHO.

I use Autozone for fuses and light bulbs.

Have a great day,

I've used many A.Z. parts over the years... most were excellent, a few were not. Nobody's perfect.
As for a Condenser(not Compressor) I would compare price, warranty, level of difficulty to replace part and country of manufacture and then make my decision. I would buy a new water pump from them but maybe not a rebuilt. The few problems I've had were usually with reman. stuff such as master cylinders.

P.S. Make sure your water pump leak isn't just loose attachment bolts or such.

Listen to what Larry said........especially a part like an a/c compressor.

If you bought a rebuilt alternator from Autozone AND it failed, hey no harm no foul you install another one under warrranty. Id' cost you an hour's labor and a hassle.

On the other hand if you bought a rebuilt a/c compressor and it failed (not just leaked), there is a considerable amount of "collateral damage" that would have be fixed in addition to the "free compressor" they replace under warranty. They would not cover the flush, the new r/d that would be required etc etc.

Most of the normal maintenance items (pads, filters and hoses) can be purchased here at Fastlane (w/o state sales tax) AND delivered to your front door for less than you can buy the items at Autozone. Not to mention that these items will most likely have better fitment.

Yes I bought a Wahler thermostat at Autozone, couldn't find it anywhere else (Wahler is no longer the vendor for that Autozone thermostat). I know Autozone carries some Bosch parts too, but have you priced them!! $$$

I agree with the autozone remans being trash. I would have just bought from Rusty in the first place.... but the PO bought a lifetime warranty alternator at autozone. The autozone alternator failed under his 1.5 tenur and he gave me all of his warranty info just in case. Failed on me, took it back, got a replacement, installed it. Nothing. Took it back, got another one, tested it before I left the store, bad. Demanded to get the PO's money back, which they did. Took the 150 and bought a Bosch rebuild (not a rebuilt bosch) and even though I had the core charge it was still 130 or so. I had a working alternator again, and 2 year roadside assistance plan from Bosch for buying their alternator.

Autozone is good for fluids, fuses, and all the little stuff. Wish they had better managers though. Some of the stores in the area their workers would *make* phone calls on their cell phones while checking me out at the register.

Autozone parts are junk. I don't care about a liftime warranty, I almost got stranded on I-95 because a set of 1 year old Bosch lifetime warranty plug wires decided to ark. I'd rather pay twice as much and only have to replace a part once. They offer a lifetime warranty for a reason.

If your gonna buy parts locally try to find a good independent store. I have two excellent independents locally, one import exclusively store. They both have EVERYTHING and often the weird stuff like a box of ATE caliper pins just laying about, etc. Either support a good local or the excellent online sources mentioned above. Buying anything from the big McParts places just reinforces the mediocre quality and nonexistant technical abilities they are famous for. RT
