signs of oil in ignition switch/assembly
RE: 1984 300D Can anyone tell me what it means (also how serious) when there is oil coming through the vacuum lines leading up to the ignition switch assembly? I was dismantling the whole ignition the other day when I noticed a small amount of motor oil making its way through the two vacuum fittings that attach to the side of the assembly.
1. Where is this coming from? 2. How serious is this? Catastrophic? 3. How to fix it? I'm sure this has been addressed before-Iwouldn't know where to look in a search, under "oil leak", "ignition", "injection pump". Thanks. |

Shutoff valve usually...
The shutoff valve has a diaphragm in it that goes bad and though it may still shutoff the motor the vacuum system continues to pull vacuum until the system bleeds off completely and it slowly pulls oil up from the IP to the switch.

Replace before you have to pop the hood and use the lever to shut it off every time -- it will rain cats and dogs every time you have to do this for at least a week.
Oil does nasty things to all the vac stuff, so don't wait. Peter

From past postings it sounds like this migrating oil can rot out things up at the "ignition sw" end. When this happens it can go everywhere. Had it down on the radio, into the ACC connectors and all over many of the cabled wires under the console. PO had changed out the whole ign sw and column lock sometime before we prchased the car, and there was no new leaking; but still had a mess that the PO should have dealt with sometime earlier.

I am dealing with that same damn problem this weekend.
Soaked under the dash. First, put a mityvac on your IP shutoff to see if it holds vacuum. If not, bingo! Be very careful when you replace that thing~! Read the threads.... Got mine for $40 at *************** Then, clean out all the oil in lines with brake cleaner. Make sure it dries before reassembly Get under your dash with a rag of alcohol and clean up all the oil before you start a fire! Replace all wet fittings and rubber tube, it is cheap. More info at threads: IP shutoff valve, vacuum valve |
