Kinda OT, but relevant

I need a replacement driver's side mirror for my W126, a 1981 300SD. What happened was, well, to make a long story short, the mirror was bent back towards the rear of the car by accident, and I heard a loud SNAP. The mirror is still in place, but loose. So, what is the part number for the mirror? It's the kind of mirror that's adjusted with a knob, not electrically.

I'm sure you can find one in a wrecking yard so I wouldn't worry about getting a part number. I'm sure if you pulled it off you could find it somewhere on the mirror.

I did the same thing to my passenger side mirror on the SD. However, I had an even bigger problem. The mirror will normally bend back toward the rear of the car because it is on a folding hinge in that direction. What it will not do, if you are backing out of a garage, is bend the slightest amount forward if you just touch the mirror on the wood trim of the garage door. Bye bye aluminum casting. They are available new for about $300. but I would advise you to try and find one on e-bay for about $75.00. It took me a couple of months, but, I finally got a decent one.

I cannot confirm the 1981 but the 1984 is a piece of cake. Just pop the triangular trim piece that sits forward of the glass and there are three screws there that go directly into the mirror. Take you five minutes.

I found this website that sells brand new mirrors, and they have a brand new W126 driver's side mirror for $52.95 I'm going to the parts yard this weekend to see if they can beat that price. If not, I might just go ahead and order. This is it. Has anyone ever done business with this company before?

$52.00 for a brand new mirror!! That's fantastic. Be nice to know that it was decent, but, I think you'll have a hard time getting below that price from a junkie.

Ok, I think by 84, the 300SDs had both mirrors electrically adjustable. But the 81 and 82 models had the manually adjustable driver's side mirror, so in order to get the triangular trim off to access the screws, I need to get the little adjustment tab off. I don't know how to remove it though. Anyone here know how?

My guess is that there may be a set screw on the knob. If there isn't you might try heating (no flames please) the knob up a little and then pry it off.

There is a little plastic locking piece in the plastic handle. Look real close and you will see it. Locking piece comes out then the handle just slides off. I believe there are little ridges or serations on the locking piece so you can move it with a finger or small screwdriver.

My '84 still has the manual mirror on drivers side.
Thanx for the link, though. My passenger side has been slightly damaged since I bought the car, and at that price I may as well replace it. Let us know what the quality is like if/when you order one.

Thanks for the help. I'm going to order the new $53 one, since the parts yard wants $80 for a used one, and I know the MB dealer will be an arm and a leg.

$80 sounds like a rip-off from a boneyard. Its time for you to look for another place. $53 sounds like a great deal for a new one.
Is that for an OEM one or a repro model that will break or fall off the first time you close your door?

This mirror is an OEM one. Total price, $69.85. Shipping and handling included. I ordered it on Friday evening, so it will be shipped out Monday morning. It should arrive here by Friday, via UPS ground. UPS air is faster, but I would be looking at $112.95 total. So I see this as a good deal. I'll let you know how it turns out when it arrives.

It's here. It arrived earlier today, but I just opened it tonight. So, I took some pics to show you (4), and I will be installing it tommorow.
