240d drive shaft question
Hey Guys, after replacing the center shaft bearing on my 83 240d, I noticed increasing vibration starting at 30mph on acceleration. I did mark the shaft as directed and reattached the shaft at that point. There were no factory marks that I could find even though my car was manufactured in 12/82. Should I try to shift the splines one or two notches? Is a rebalance of the propeller shaft an expensive job?
Thanks, Jackson |

There ARE factory marks, but you have to know what to look for. There are two "knots" on one piece that match one "knot" on the other piece. These "knots" are just raised areas a little bigger than a BB.
If they are already aligned, don't change the position, if they aren't align them. If you still have vibration, check the u-joint for stiffness in one position. If it is stiff, place a washer between one side of the carrier bearing mount and the body, then put the bolt back through. This will slightly change the moving position of the u-joint and may make the vibration go away. Is it a solid vibration at all speeds, or a thrumming at about 60 or 65. The worn u-joint/washer thing applies to the thrumming. Good luck, |

Also, jack up the rear end (both wheels off the ground) and loosen the two center support bearing bolts, spin the wheels a bit and let it the bearing find it's center. Re-tighten, drive test.
