how much life left on my 79 300 d?

Hello fellow dieslers,

I would very much like to get your opinions of how much engine life (in miles) I might expect from my 79 300d wagon...I mean would YOU bother with it? I apprecitate you time, and feedback.

without doing an engine compression test, this is what I can tell yall. I go though about a quart of oil every 650 miles. The test where you block the breather tube and count in seconds how long it takes the engine to stalls out; I get about 5-6 seconds. I've been about 5,000 miles on the air cleaner, and its not that bad, not full of oil... I see faint exhaust smoke, on startup and when gunning it, with a fuel smell... the car has 379,000 miles, I was told the engine was rebuilt at 250,000, but not sure if it was a total rebuild...I just did the valve adjustment, everything looks smooth and unscarred... I've driven it 7,000 miles so far, no trouble, get 25-26 mpg... It started last winter here in Washington STate, except once when it was below zero and sitting a week...

What do you think? (Educated Guesstimates!) If I care and maintain it on schedule, how many miles on this engine?

Thanks folks
Mike

The oil usage scares me but other than that it sounds fine.

Are you sure its burning that much oil and not just throwing it?

Don

As Diesel Don mentioned.. fix any leaks... perhaps consider replacing the valve stem seals...
and then just do what you know needs to be done to keep it going... that oil usage , even if you are burning it is not that bad...that used to be the average oil burning for an American car... we are all just used to Honda's and such being so frugal and well built these days....
You may be surprised when you look back ten years from now and it is still running.... and smile when you remember how worried you were....

The oil consumption may all depend on the type of oil you use. It is important to use a good diesel grade oil such as Rotella, Delo 400, etc.

I remember an MB mechanic around here saying that the vacuum pumps can casue them to burn oil? I was talking to him about a prospective car that was blowing black smoke, he said from the description that it might be the vacuum pump sucking it up and burning it. If so, I think that the diaphragm might fix it. I'm not sure and I would wait to see what some more knowledgeable people think.
Thanks
David
