What model did the German Nazi own?

I heard it had a lot of horespower for a 1040's car....


any info on thatcar will help..thanks

I was too young to know enough to know exactly what model it was, but as a child I got to see it up close, everything but sit inside it. The glass was probably an inch thick.

It was on a trailer and was taken around and they charged admission to see it.

At least it was billed as Hitlers car. It could have been a scam for all we knew.

Hitler is reputed to have used at least five different automobiles. One that has been authenticated by Mercedes records is in a museum in Canada. I believe it is a G4/W31. I'm not sure of any of the other models.

BTW, Hitler did not drive. He was always driven by someone else.

We may have seen the same car, did it have glass damage from a GI's Thompson? The glass wasn't penetrated, just lightly damaged. I was justa little kid and don't remember where I saw it or how old I was.

IMHO it is ridiculous to feel guilt for having one of Hitlers cars and think that it sends the wrong message. Museum pieces don't send messages, the information provided surrounding the item is the message. These cars are just artifcacts and do not glorify the third reich.

On the contrary. If it is handled correctly they bring up curiosity in young peoples minds. At that point those young people can be taught about the evil surrounding this terrible man and his regime.

Any message that comes from such a museum is in their own hands. The artifacts simply bring up the subject for discussion.

People need to use their heads rather than jumping to such conclusions.

BTW the car in Photo Number 1 looks much more like the car I saw. I do remember glass damage but didn't remember the story about a GI's Thompson doing it. That is plausible though. By the time the GI's penetrated Germany far enough to reach any of Hitlers possessions they had seen their friends blood and their dead bodies all around them and they probably had discovered the concentration camps by that time. Laying into Hitlers car with a Thompson would be a pretty natural reaction .

One of my favorites, the 770v Grosser Mercedes.

The weight of the car prevented it from reaching higher speeds. The tires of the time simply could not take it.

The six wheel car you're thinking of was probably a Maybach-Zepplin. The one that comes to mind for me is the one the general in "Hogan's Heros" rides in sometimes, it's a 6 wheel convertible. I beleive it had a Mercedes star on the hood for some reason but it wasn't a Mercedes.

Hitler owned (or least drove up in) a red 1923 Mercedes to the famed Beer Hall Putsch along with Rosenberg and the eunuch’s bodyguard.

We were talkin about Hitler's car last year on the vintage forum, when Canadian museum threatened to put it up for auction to raise funds.

Apparently it had fuel tank of more than 100 gallons, solid tires and armored plating, tipping the scales somewhere around 8 - 10,000 lbs.

Its got an interesting history too..... was recovered in the Balkans after it was driven out of Berlin by nazis fleeing the Russians. Then American GI's painted it military green and used it as dailly driven motorpool vehicle.

Then it found its way to Arizona, was auctioned for somewhere around 1/4 million dolllars in the '70s and donated to the Canadian War Museum where it now rests.

I've seen the limousine at the Ottawa War Museum. IMHO, it is the most impressive piece in their collection. All their other pieces are very nice, but not as unique as this one-of-a-kind survivor. I think the museum would be very foolish to auction it off. It is still in the original unrestored condition, with bullet holes and dings.

An artifact like that car belongs in a museum. To suggest that it somehow is evil to have it there is just evidence of how ridiculous some folks can get with their political "correctness."

The issue that always amazes me
 

is whether Hitler was ignorant or chose to ignore the fact that his favorite cars were named after the granddaughter of a prominent Budapest rabbi.

Hitler was indeed born an Austrian citizen, from the same German-Bohemian dialect region as Ferdinand Porsche (and my mother's parents), but he proclaimed himself "German" after WWI and made much of his drive to unify all "Germans," in which group he included Austrians, Tyroleans, Alsatians -- anyone who spoke any form of German, including sometimes even the Dutch, Danes and Scandinavians. Meanwhile, my ancestors had to flee because a Jesuit member of the family at the University of Prague, just before the Munich conference, gave some anti-Nazi sermons (based on very conservative "Only the Catholic heirs of the Holy Roman Empire are willed by God to rule any union of German speakers" arguments). Actually, what he probably found objectionable about National Socialism was the "Socialism" part, not the "Nationalism."

I once confronted the Dean of Admissions of the school at which I teach with this issue: "Do you realize how much different the history of the 20th century might have been if that Austrian teenager had been admitted to rather than rejected by the program he wanted to pursue at a certain Vienna art school?" She didn't really try to answer that one.

It appears that your ancestors had very good instincts.

When in Europe, when you cross from Germany to Austria or Austria to Germany, you just really can't at all tell the difference. I expect that this was true in the twenties and thirties as well.

My Father-in-Law's mother came to Minnesota from a rural area between Hamburg and the Dutch border, and in 1944-45, my Father-in-Law often found it easier to understand the Dutch farmers than the German POWs he was sometimes expected to interrogate.

The Star had an article on these cars sometime over the past two years. Also Frank Barrett's "Mercedes Benz Buyers Guide" gives details and specs. There were both open and closed Grossers, and all were heavily armored after the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich. Also presented as state gifts to Span and USSR.

The big six-wheel job is a G4, and a Mercedes. I'm sure Maybachs, Horches, and many other fine cars were appropriated for Nazi use. The '60s movie "Night of The Generals" shows a lovely Maybach Zeppelin convertible sedan, as well as an Hispano-Suiza town car being used as Nazi staff cars.

I've seen one "Hitler Mercedes" at the Imperial Palace in Las Vegas. At least one "Hitler's Car" flogged on the carny cirucuit was evidently an open Duesenberg, about as American as you can get.
