Great news
Just found out the 1979 300sd which is the one we are keeping has working air conditioning. I did not think there was an older turbo diesel that actually had working AC. This is the car he sold me for $50 Turns out it’s the car were going to keep as a daily driver. I am so pleased

Win a set of injectors
The 78 and 79 have both had there motors and transmissions pulled the 78 motor and 79 transmissions are going in the 79 which we are keeping. The 79 motor had a rod knock so after I drained all the fluids I fired her up. She died at 45 seconds then started again how long did it run after starting the second time whoever comes closest to the run time wins a free set of injectors or ? Shipped postage paid buy me anywhere in the continental United States. In the event of a tie the first one to post wins. I will also be posting tons of 116 parts in the for sale section soon.
Long day wrenching got a lot done had some fun. 5 cylinders are so easy to pull when you take a sawz all to the front clip they come straight out. Played a little smash up derby too in the end the SJPD put an end to our shenanigans. Dave San Jose CA |

I'll say 45 seconds the second time also.

jbaj007 wins
jbaj007 wins it went 1 minute 31 seconds smoked a ton then died. I think it would have started again but when I tried the battery was dead. We had a bet here on how long it would go and replacing the battery was not allowed. I tripped carrying a transmission today hurt my back good so won’t be online for a few days. You can have injectors I have several sets for 300d 300sd or 240d. Or other parts from 78 79 80 83 300sd 82 300d. As long as shipping is not outrageous what do you need and what year model car is it. I will see if I can accommodate you.
Going to take lots of pain medicine and sleep for a day or two till my back is better. Dave S |

mattdave, it's good I found another parts guy since my guy in southern Indiana is running out of some of the w116 parts I usually need. I'll let you know what I need. I may also need a pair of injectors, I'm not sure. The car cranks a bunch to start it even when it's hot and it never took nearly this long to start it last year. I use to be able to go out in 70 degree weather and skip the gp's. It would start in under 2 cranks, I'm also suspecting the IP being out of time. Have you had to time yours yet? Do you use that drip tube or some other way?
Thanks David

update
No I have not timed Ip yet next weekend going to try drip tube method and adjusting the rack dampener. We have the $50.00 300 SD Running. So far we have spent $50 on the car, $200 on donor car and less Than $20 on supplies. Best of all we have sold $150 in parts that are left over Today we are switching the vacuum pump from a 1980 300sd, Are current pump is a 3 outlet type and besides it looks crummy with big bolts blocking the extra outlets. It does not work well. We are also going to replace the water pump at the same time. The current water pump looks like a RTV sandwich and that’s never a good sing. Then we are using a K&N filter we don’t like the blow by going to the turbo inlet. It currently runs blow by gasses from valve cover right to the big elbow coming off the turbo. We have an oil separator from a 240 D so will rig up something to deal with blow buy gasses. The engine tranny swap had to pull 2 motors and trannys to get one good running was a lot of work but well worth it when the motor fired up and we took are ride around the block. Thank god we discovered the bad oil cooler line while the motor was out of the car it would have been no fun to change in the car. So far so good I think today’s projects will go well. I do wonder though if any one knows why MBZ applied vacuum to the air cleaner box on the first W116.

It is a daily driver
As of today the 1979 300sd is a daily driver we ended up having some problems switching vacuum pumps but we worked them out. We got delayed waiting for gaskets and had to replace the water pump twice. It still shakes too much and the glow plug light does not come on. It needs just about every maintenance item done to it. But power is ok brakes are great and the steering and suspension are ok. We have a lot of pretty new parts to swap from a parts car like springs shocks and ball joints. It took longer than expected but it will be a nice car and it drives pretty darn good for less than $300 and a lot of work.
Happy in San Jose CA! Dave & Matt Sid |

I'm not sure, but I think its venting into the airfilter so as not to have a stream of ait shooting out into the engine compartment..

I see
So you think the second line out of the vacuum pump is not vacuum at all but it’s a pressured line resulting from the way they created vacuum in the first pumps. A byproduct as it were interesting theory since my pump did not work I cant test it.

I think thats the way it was on my 115 with the older diaphram pump, where the newer piston ones vent to the crankcase...

It is running good
Adjusting the rack dampener made a huge difference in the idle. The car wanders a little bit and it has more body roll cornering than other 116s I have driven, we noticed 2 things the parts car we have is much harder to push the front end down than are car. Number 2 is the passenger side front of the car is 1 inch lower than the driver’s side. I suspect the springs, I tried searching different terms but got no hits does this sound like springs for the ride height the body roll and the stiffness of the front end all opinions welcome.
