Good job Chuck,

These cars respond to maintance as well as the lack there of.................

Honestly, I forgot about cleaning the cover stem as well as replacing the o-rings. I'll just do that every time now.

Mine is still holding strong.

Take care and congrats.

JCD

I found hard as a rock o-rings on both my 84 & 83 when I bought them. How often are these o-rings supposed to be changed?

Probably overkill, but my Independant MB tech says he changes them every oil change.

"I found hard as a rock o-rings" ..... LOL
Mine were so hard I actually thought they were made of metal... then I put my exacto blade on them and they shattered into little pieces...
I think the FSM says to renew when putting in a new filter...and make sure your stem is clean.....

On my E300 they come in the box with the oil filter so you change them every time. I still don't understand why Hengst can include them with the 606 filter but not the 616/7.

Being somewhat new to the 603, are there any similar o-rings on this engine, like the 617 has?

The 603 holds 1.5 bar at idle but will not get to 3.0 until the engine reaches just over 1500 rpm. Is this typical? The 617 gets there at just over 1000 rpm.

Normal

Brian,

My car is a 603 ( 87 SDL). 1.5 at idle and 3 very soon after stepping on the pedal. Just over 261K now. Yes it has the o-rings as well.

Chuck

hmmmm

hi guys.I had a 240 d that stayed at bar 3 at idle all the time.My new to me 300td turbo sat for two years . While trying to start, the pressure stuck at 3.I went about draining the fuel tank replacing fuel filters and oil +filter [amsoil+Wix fullflow]. now oil pressure is about 1.8 at idle and 3 when driving?

wow, great thread to bump! I've got some stuff to check this coming week on my cars now.

btw, it would be great if MB would include those small seals with their oil filters. They even recently stopped putting the drain plug washer in with the filters too and the idiots in my parts department keep giving me the wrong larger ones for the newer vehicles. I've seen MB's parts quality go downhill since the whole chrysler thing. For god sakes how cheap can you get?!

What O-rings are we talking about? My 1980 300TD N/A has the oil filter housing with the 2 bolts on top. The only o-ring I know of is the large one that goes around the cap. The oil filter itself (Mann 1055) comes with rubber grommet/seals on each end. Am I missing something??

Ut oh, heh. Mine are that hard on mine, I'll be changing those next oil change! I still usually have between 1.8 and 2.0 bar oil pressure at idle though, so they're still working ok.......next change they're getting replaced though.

Bill, if that 617 is the same as the newer ones, there are two small o-rings near the bottom end of the hollow shaft that passes through the center of the filter. They are easily mistaken for metal washers if they have been there for several years.

oil filter stem

It's a really good idea to point the bottom of the stem at the ground (or into a trash can) when you blow air into the top hole ....... not at your chest like I did. Big spout of oil came right out, showing me that the pipe is clear & I'm a dunce.
