So what's something like this worth?

crash9 05-03-2004 11:12 PM

Would this bolt right up to a 240???

Palangi 05-03-2004 11:15 PM

I paid a little over $2000, with a 240D attached.

No. Unfortunately for you in the four-bagger crowd, this particular gearbox will only bolt up to the sole, manual transmission-equipped turbodiesel wagon in the USA: Marlene

Seriously, it will bolt up to a 240 engine with a manual 4-spd tranny but will take some wrangling of the shifter linkages, rear crossmember and driveshaft stub. The shifter would be nice to have but might be able to be adapted from a regular 4-spd shifter...reverse will be weird and may not have a lock out. From the looks of the shift arms on that tranny, I'm guessing that it's not a 'Dog Leg' either...too bad.

Are the difs the same. Is 5th an OD or is it just more of a close ratio gearbox. My car spends 85% of it’s life at 70mph – 5% on a nasty dirt road. It’d be nice to have something not quite 3rd for around town and small hills. Hope this doesn’t get to be a bad auction

I think 5th is an OD gear.

If only I had the $$... *drooling*

leathermang 05-04-2004 07:46 AM

Yes, it is an overdrive.... the early ones were just a bolt on at the back end of the four speed... the later ones were cast in one case.

This gearbox is just the one piece 4-speed with a rev-5th tailpiece.

Can this fit in a W123 with an automatic tranny?

About this five sp manual on e bay

Anyone find out if this will mate with the U S spec w123 that normally has an auto trans

I have done some research on this on this board and the answer I came up with was NO? I am not sure on this

I believe the word was a manual mercedes trans could not handle the torque of the 5 cyl turbo.

Am I wrong

Beggin to be told I am wrong in this assumption

Peace

I would think that it would handle normal day to day driving without any problem. There are many of our forum members who have taken 4-speeds from 240's and put them in their 300 turbos and aren't having any problems or they're not saying anything if they are.

Isn’t the four speed a Borg-Warner? Same as International used to put in small trucks?
