1995 300d
I'm thinking of buying a 1995 300D. It has 151,000 miles, but runs and drives great. The only thing that doesn't work is the outside temperature display on the instrument cluster, but I can live without that. Are there any typical problems with this particular engine? I have a 240D now and have had a 300CD, but no experience with the newer diesels, so I'm not sure of what to look for. Also, what is a fair price for such a car? It has all the records and has always been serviced by the book. I think I can get it for $6,500-$7,000. Is that on target or hi/low? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I can say that after driving my 1980 240D this 300D will fly and is really quiet.

I really like mine.. My wife drives it now that I have the '85 and she absolutely raves about it. THe miles are a bit on the high side but that is better than being too low; you want the diesel to have been driven vs. being a garage queen.
If you could score it for $7000, that would be a killer deal in my opinion. I guess with the new CDI's out, there will be a shift downward for older model diesels. Don;t think there are any issues per-se with the OM606... There are some reports of hard-to-extract glow plugs that can break off because of the length of them, but that is not common as I understand it. I did replace the wiring harness on mine but that is frankly a Do-it-yourself job after shelling out $400 for the harness. However, mine is a south Texas car so heat played a role in the deterioration. I love the chassis... very tight and a real spirited engine that likes to rev... But still, get it checked out at the dealer if possible before-hand.
