Tim, we did keep this thread going a lot long than it would have on it,s own,I think In answer to your last question I think the responsibility for protecting the environment is for the children to come is on every individual to educate themselves so they can make inforned decisions. Leaving it to any goverment body or industry group without constant watchdogging is asking for trouble. The EPA is a great example of footdragging and industry protectionism masquerading as a force thats supposed to be protecting our childrens future health.

Rant off

P.S. mpuman, do you really believe that stuff or are you just rabblerousing?

Lightbulb Today's Prices

Hess Diesel -- $1.759/gallon (42 cetane)

Sunoco Gas -- $1.969/gallon (87 octane), $2.139/gallon (94 octane)

These are the cheapest prices within 10 miles of my house right now.

I started this thread 2 1/2 weeks ago!

I've been reopening our restaurant and haven't had a day off since! I can't believe that there has been this many replies. Diesel has crept to the $2.45 range. I've been researching biodiesel production on the web. I have infinite access to waste vegetable oil. I'm not sure whether or not I'd have the time to begin such an endeavor as I can't even get enough time to restore my 300SD as it is. I'm not sure how long the savings by home brewing biodiesel would take to offset the investment in equipoment and time. It may be more of a principle thang. It's a great idea at any rate.

to our European friends....

Our *****ing about the prices of fuel seems absurd when compared to the prices for fuel that you pay.
The problem in the U.S. is that outside of major metropolitan areas, our public transportation system is pretty weak. We don't take trains so to speak, we drive everywhere. Do you feel that your ability to travel by quickly train offsets the high prices of your fuel? Why is fuel so much more expensive in Europe?

Fuel in Europe is about the same price as our's, they just tax the devil out of the fuel. I'd love to travel across the country on a train, but there is not a lot of options there.

How about non-existent like it is here in SW Washington.

diesel has gone up here but not a lot compared to gas

1.79 for diesel and almost everywhere locally is over $2/gal for regular gas.

$1.699 for #2 Diesel and $1.899 regular unleaded gas.

The 240D will be running on WVO in a few days.

access Gasoline prices all over the U.S. and Canada.(Keeping
in mind that the "Seven Sisters" are raping us at about $.20
-$.30 less per gallon than Gas customers, you can approximate
Diesel prices) [Non-Georgia Tech Approved exterpolations]

In your position, I would not bother with Biodiesel. I would go straight WVO one tank system. Not like its going to freeze where you are. BTW, I just paid the highest ever price on diesel in Dallas area of 185.9 / gal. Still less than gasoline and keeping my Durango in the garage up to today. I had to drive it because I am waiting for a replace oil cooler on the SD. I could feel the $$ blowing out the exhaust pipe at 13mpg.

what are the drawbacks of WVO?

It seems to me like it'd gum up your engine. Take a look at the bottom of a sautee pan or sauce pot, all that gunk is congealed oil. How does WVO compare to dino diesel in terms of power, mileage, longevity, etc.? Sound interesting. what about converting on a high mileage engine?

Lets see, if fuel costs $2.40 per gallon, Southern California price, and a 240D gets 30 MPG. I come up with 6 cents a mile for fuel.

A complete engine at Walters Mercedes in Riverside is $4,700. Allow $1,300 for tax, instalation and whatever and I get $6,000.

So replaceing the engine every 100,000 miles and not paying for fuel would be the same as buying fuel at market rate and never replacing the engine.

Of course if you can have an engine rebuilt for $3,000, you would only have to get 50,000 miles out of the engine to break even.

Then 30 MPG might be a little generous, that's a bit higher than Mercedes rates it. If you use a lower number for fuel consumption you don't have to get as many miles to break even.

Last week I picked up an engine for $145 at a local pick a part yard. They had a half price sale on engines. That engine would only have to run a couple of thousand miles to break even. Used engines can be found for around $600 without much difficulty. If a $600 engine runs for 10,000 miles before gumming up you break even.

I came across an interesting post on a Peugot site suggesting using GM top end cleaner to clean the carbon out of combustion cylinders. I may have seen a similar postings here. it involves removing the injectors and pouring the top end cleaner into the combustion chambers, letting it sit over night and cranking the engine to get the stuff out. severe warnings were made to keep the stuff off the paind and change oil immeadiatly after process. The claim was that it would make a tired diesel run like new.

Some report I read recently said that biodiesel increases the wear on an engine about 7 to 12 %. I do not recall any stats on used Krispy Kreme juice.

I'll fire up that used engine to prove WVO, then do some testing on my 240D. All the numbers assume WVO is free and does not account for collecting, filtering or other time involved in using it.
